FedEx Express Australia is seeking an experienced and capable Operations Manager to join the Australian Customs Clearance leadership team.

This role provides leadership across operational teams, offshore support partners, vendors and key stakeholders in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for operational performance, workforce planning, compliance outcomes, process improvement, resource management and customer service delivery.

We are seeking a strong operational leader first and foremost. While Customs Clearance experience is highly regarded, it is not essential. The successful candidate will be expected to quickly develop a strong understanding of Customs Clearance operations, compliance obligations and regulatory requirements following appointment.

Success in this role requires strong operational leadership, sound judgement, effective planning and the ability to develop people while delivering service, compliance and business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People
  • Lead, coach and develop frontline leaders and operational teams.
  • Build a culture of accountability, engagement, safety and continuous improvement.
  • Develop succession plans and leadership capability across the operation.
  • Conduct regular performance, coaching and development conversations.
  • Support employee engagement initiatives and action plans.
Operations & Service
  • Manage performance against service, productivity, quality and cost objectives.
  • Lead workforce planning, volume forecasting and resource planning activities to ensure operational readiness and effective deployment of internal, vendor and offshore resources.
  • Lead planning activities to support peak periods, volume growth, operational change and contingency readiness.
  • Support delivery of customer commitments in a high-volume, time-critical environment.
  • Analyse operational data and performance trends to identify opportunities and address emerging risks.
  • Maintain effective contingency, recovery and peak-season plans.
Compliance & Risk
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, company and operational requirements.
  • Maintain a culture where compliance, safety and integrity are never compromised.
  • Support internal and external audits, reviews and compliance activities.
  • Drive operational discipline and effective business controls.
Stakeholder & Business Management
  • Manage relationships with offshore support teams, vendors, service providers and internal stakeholders.
  • Lead change and continuous improvement initiatives across people, processes, technology and performance.
  • Drive productivity improvements, cost management and service excellence.
  • Support forecasting, planning and operational decision-making activities.
  • Support relationships with regulators, service providers and key operational stakeholders where required.
About You

You are a proven operational leader who can build capability, make sound decisions and lead teams through change.

You will demonstrate:

  • Significant leadership experience within operations, logistics, supply chain, aviation, freight forwarding or a similarly complex operational environment.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
  • Strong planning, organisation and prioritisation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Experience managing operational performance, workforce planning, productivity and cost control.
  • Ability to influence and engage stakeholders across multiple functions and levels of the organisation.
  • Strong communication, coaching and leadership skills.
  • High levels of integrity, accountability and professional judgement.
  • Experience managing vendors, offshore support teams or shared-service environments will be highly regarded.
  • Knowledge of Customs Clearance, Freight Forwarding, International Trade or Regulatory Compliance environments.
  • Experience working with operational systems, reporting tools and business improvement initiatives.
  • Relevant qualifications in Business, Operations, Logistics, Supply Chain or a related discipline.

While direct Customs Clearance experience is not required, the successful candidate must demonstrate a willingness and ability to rapidly develop the technical and regulatory knowledge required to successfully lead a high-performing Customs Clearance operation.

Why Join FedEx?

This is an opportunity to lead an important operational function within one of the world's most recognised transportation and logistics organisations.

You will work alongside experienced operational and technical specialists while helping shape the future direction of the Australian Customs Clearance business through strong leadership, operational excellence, people development and continuous improvement.

If you are a proven operations leader looking for your next challenge, we would like to hear from you.
