Job summary

Pedal Power ACT is seeking a part-time Community Engagement Officer in Canberra to connect with members, support volunteers, and grow our cycling community. You’ll work with staff to ensure members feel supported, engaged, and informed while expanding our volunteer base and delivering community events.

Community Engagement Officer (Part Time)

About Us

With more than 50 years of advocating for people who ride, Pedal Power ACT is Canberra’s leading cycling advocacy and community organisation. With a thriving membership of around 5,000 and a growing public presence, we champion the safe, enjoyable, and convenient use of bikes in the ACT.

Our work spans advocacy, training, and community engagement. We run skills courses for children and adults, host community rides and events, and deliver inclusive programs like the Bike Library, Fitability, and Cycling Without Age. Our advocacy is powered by a dedicated volunteer Advocate Coordinator and a network of local advocates working across the ACT’s five electorates to improve safety, access and infrastructure for riders.

A small and committed staff team works hand-in-hand with more than 100 dedicated volunteers who power our programs and help us promote cycling as a pathway to better health and wellbeing across the Canberra community.

About the Role

The Community Engagement Officer plays a pivotal role in delivering on Pedal Power’s mission. You’ll implement strategies to grow our membership, support and expand our volunteer base, and coordinate events and campaigns that bring people into the cycling community.

You’ll work closely with the Executive Director and the broader team, including the Marketing and Communications Officer, Program Support Officer, and Office Manager, to ensure members and volunteers feel connected, supported, and engaged.

This is a varied and relationship-driven role, ideal for someone who enjoys turning ideas into action and is confident managing competing priorities in a small, high-impact team.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement Pedal Power’s membership strategy to drive growth and retention
• Manage day-to-day membership operations, including overseeing volunteers who assist with member services
• Build and coordinate a robust volunteer network that supports programs, advocacy, and community events
• Plan, organise and deliver community events and promotional activities in collaboration with staff and external partners
• Maintain accurate data, generate monthly reports, and assist with general office functions
• Take on other projects or responsibilities as required, aligned with Pedal Power’s strategic priorities
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with a willingness to connect with members, volunteers and community partners.
• Demonstrated organisational skills, initiative, and capacity to meet deadlines and juggle priorities.
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers, including availability for occasional after-hours events.
• Interest in, and ability to, recruit and support volunteers.
• Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including members.
• Competence in office administration, data management, and reporting.
• Flexibility, resilience and a problem-solving mindset.
• Regular cycling experience and an understanding of the needs and perspectives of people who ride bikes.
• Experience using customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
• Background or interest in not-for-profit, membership-based, or recreational organisations.
