Job summary

M Group is seeking a Mechanical or Civil Engineer to join our water and wastewater capital project delivery team. You will prepare design options, conduct calculations for mechanical, hydraulic, and building services equipment, and review P&IDs and datasheets with the Principal Designer.

You will conduct field-supported evaluations, ensure regulatory permit compliance, maintain project documentation, and escalate risks early.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or HND in mechanical or civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes, including pumped systems and hydraulics.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the water industry.
  • Proficiency with engineering software and MS Office.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and permit requirements for water facilities.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development; registration supported.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyse key design options with the Project Manager and client, mitigating risks and upholding the project Basis of Design.
  • Perform design calculations for mechanical, hydraulic, and building services equipment sizing.
  • Oversee outputs for P&IDs and datasheets with the Principal Designer to develop new solutions.
  • Conduct engineering evaluations and feasibility studies for wastewater projects with field inspections and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineers and Southern Water Enabling Team to ensure environmental compliance and permit requirements.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, including reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Escalate issues impacting time, cost, or quality before they become problems or exceed timescales.
  • Support Health & Safety excellence; produce safe designs in line with CDM Regulations and codes of practice.
  • Stay updated with industry best practices and identify innovations for consideration.

This role will be within our water and wastewater capital project delivery team. Our teams deliver large-scale capital programmes aimed at keeping water infrastructure resilient for the long-term while protecting the environment.

What will you be doing?
  • Prepare and analyse key design options, for review and agreement with the Project Manager and the client. Ensuring risks and gaps are mitigated whilst always upholding the Project Basis of Design.
  • Design calculations facilitating the sizing of mechanical, hydraulic, and building services equipment.
  • Oversee the outputs for several processes including P&IDs and datasheets, working with the Principal Designer to develop new solutions.
  • Conduct engineering evaluations (with field inspections) and feasibility studies for wastewater projects, analysing data and identifying potential issues or improvements.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineers and the Southern Water Enabling Team to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permit requirements.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, including reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Escalate issues that may impact on time/cost/quality before they become a problem or exceed agreed timescales.
  • Support the drive towards excellence in Health & Safety. Demonstrate applied knowledge and skills to produce safe designs to discharge your obligation according to CDM Regulations, standards, and accepted codes of practice.
  • Keep up to date with industry best practices and, where appropriate, identify innovation/best practices for consideration.
What you’ll bring
  • Minimum of HND or bachelor’s degree in mechanical or civil engineering or able demonstrate a suitable level of experience.
  • Do you have a strong knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes, including pumped treatment systems and hydraulics?
  • Have you gained a minimum of 2 yrs experience within the water industry?
  • Proficiency in using engineering software and tools, such as MS office suite and relevant engineering design software packages.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve engineering issues.
  • Do you have knowledge of environmental regulations and permit requirements in relation to water and wastewater treatment facilities?
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in design calculations, cost estimates, and technical documentation.
  • Are you committed to continuous learning and professional development in the field of water and wastewater engineering?
  • Are you a member of a professional organisation such as ICE or IMECHE? Professional registration will be supported.
