Job summary

Chandler Macleod is recruiting an experienced Civil Design Engineer to lead and manage engineering design development across a diverse project portfolio. The role is hands-on, requiring governance adherence and the ability to sign off designs with confidence.

Based in Perth with hybrid arrangements and occasional site visits, the contract initially spans 6 months (potential to extend to 12). Start date is 1 October 2026, with a rate of 120.00 AUD per hour plus super (PAYG).

Qualifications

• Requires a degree-qualified civil engineer with design governance experience.
• Proven track record in design management/technical project management.
• Experience leading ESPs and driving design development to construction-ready status.
• Strong organisation, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage external service providers (ESPs) and drive design development from concept to construction-ready.
• Ensure designs are fit-for-purpose and comply with governance standards.
• Review incoming design deliverables and critically analyse drawings and documentation.
• Make practical engineering/design decisions and approve designs for construction.
• Maintain schedule discipline and keep stakeholders aligned and informed.

Chandler Macleod is looking tosecure an experienced Civil Design Engineer to drive and manage engineering design development across a diverse project portfolio. This is a hands-on design management role-ideal for someone who can keep work moving, influence outcomes, and confidently sign off designs within a strong governance framework.

The opportunity

• Location: Perth (CBD) - hybrid, with occasional day trips to site (e.g., to support projects or attend FATs)
• Roster: Monday to Friday (standard office hours) + ad-hoc site visits
• Contract: Initial 6 months (potential to extend to 12 months for the right person)
• Start date: 1 October 2026
• Rate: $120.00/hr + super (PAYG)

What you’ll be working on

You’ll be responsible for design and design development across a portfolio including:

• Geotechnical works
• Underground piping
• Dams / foundations
• Water mains

Key responsibilities

• Manage external service providers (ESPs) and drive design development from concept through to construction-ready
• Ensure designs are fit-for-purpose and compliant within BHP engineering governance
• Review incoming design deliverables and critically analyse drawings and documentation
• Make practical engineering/design decisions and approve designs for construction
• Maintain schedule discipline and keep stakeholders aligned and informed

What we’re looking for- Must-haves

• Degree-qualified engineer with a civil background
• Proven experience acting as a design manager / technical project manager (design governance, approvals, schedule accountability)
• Confident working with ESPs-able to hold teams to account and push outcomes
• Strong organisation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills

Nice to have

• Exposure to SPO, MicroStation, P6, SAP
• Strong Excel capability and general familiarity with BHP ways of working
