Job summary

Lake Macquarie City Council offers a 2-year Civil Construction Apprenticeship to kick-start your career. You’ll work with experienced teams to build, maintain and improve roads, footpaths, drainage and public spaces while completing a Certificate III in Civil Construction.

You'll gain practical skills through on-the-job training and study, with travel to sites across Lake Macquarie, hours 6:00am–3:30pm Mon-Thu or Tue-Fri, with occasional weekend work.

Qualifications

  • Year 10 completion (or equivalent) with English and Mathematics.
  • White Card (Construction Induction) or ability to obtain before starting.
  • Current Provisional Driver Licence (P1 or P2).

Responsibilities

  • Assist civil construction teams to build, maintain, and improve roads, footpaths, cycleways and drainage.
  • Operate tools and machinery safely under supervision.
  • Learn across different teams and projects to gain a broad range of skills.

ABOUT THE JOB

This 2-year Civil Construction Apprenticeship is the perfect opportunity to kick-start your career while making a real difference in the Lake Macquarie community. As a Civil Construction Apprentice, you'll work alongside experienced teams helping to build, maintain, and improve the roads, footpaths, cycleways, drainage systems, parks, and public spaces that our community uses every day. You'll develop practical skills, gain valuable industry experience, and complete a Certificate III in Civil Construction, with full support throughout your apprenticeship. You'll have the opportunity to work across different teams and projects, building a broad range of construction and infrastructure skills.

Through a combination of on-the-job training and formal study, you'll learn how to safely use tools, equipment, and machinery while building the skills needed for a successful career in the civil construction industry.

In this role, you'll gain experience in a variety of civil construction activities, including:

  • Road, footpath, and cycleway construction and maintenance
  • Drainage, kerb and gutter works
  • Concreting and asphalt repairs
  • Landscaping and environmental restoration projects
  • Traffic management and worksite safety
  • Operating tools, equipment, and machinery
  • Reading plans and supporting construction projects
  • Working as part of a team to deliver important community infrastructure
  • Undertake works in accordance with all relevant quality, environmental and WHS requirements.

This position is based at Council's Works Depot and involves travel to sites across Lake Macquarie.Hours are 6:00am to 3:30pm, Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday, with occasional weekend work required with notice.

ABOUT YOU

We're looking for motivated people who are eager to learn, enjoy working outdoors, and want to build a career in civil construction.

To be successful, you'll have:

  • Completion of Year 10 (Record of School Achievement) or equivalent, with satisfactory results in English and Mathematics.
  • A White Card (Construction Induction Card) or the ability to obtain one before commencing.
  • A current Provisional Driver Licence (P1 or P2).
  • A positive attitude towards workplace health and safety.
  • The ability to undertake manual and physical work in an outdoor environment.
  • A willingness to learn new skills and gain technical knowledge in civil construction.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility and commitment to completing the required qualification within the apprenticeship term.
  • Sound computer literacy skills.

Please note: Applicants who have already completed a Certificate III in Civil Construction, or a higher-level qualification in a related field, are not be eligible for this apprenticeship.
