Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the Engineering team with clear priorities and high service standards.
• Oversee preventive maintenance across hotel equipment and facilities.
• Inspect building, plant rooms and equipment; identify and repair defects.
• Maintain focus on life safety and safe work practices.
• Plan maintenance schedules and guest room servicing using asset records.
• Manage contractors and external trades per hotel procedures and safety rules.
• Coordinate hotel projects, including FF&E and CAPEX works.
• Monitor costs, staffing, rosters and energy use; seek cost savings.
• Keep accurate logs and maintenance documentation; report issues to management.
• Provide engineering support during after-hours emergencies when required.

The Role

Grand Hyatt Melbourne is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to lead our Engineering Department. You'll oversee the maintenance and operation of the hotel's building, plant and equipment, supporting every department and helping deliver a safe, comfortable experience for our guests and associates.

This is a hands-on leadership role combining day-to-day engineering operations with planning, projects and continuous improvement.
What you'll do

• Lead, coach and develop the Engineering team, setting clear priorities and maintaining high standards of work, attendance and service.
• Oversee preventive maintenance across hotel equipment and facilities, including kitchens and laundry.
• Inspect the building, plantrooms and operating equipment, identify defects and follow through on repairs and maintenance requests.
• Maintain a strong focus on life safety, essential services, occupational health and safety, and safe work practices.
• Plan and coordinate maintenance schedules, guest room servicing and work requests using HOTSOS and asset records.
• Manage contractors and external trades, ensuring they follow hotel procedures, safety requirements and guest contact standards.
• Coordinate hotel projects, including mid-sized FF&E and CAPEX works, and work with the redevelopment project team on engineering matters affecting hotel operations.
• Monitor engineering costs, staffing, rosters, leave and payroll, while identifying opportunities to reduce waste and improve value.
• Track utility consumption, report on energy use and support conservation initiatives and training.
• Keep accurate engineering logs, inspection records and maintenance documentation, and report significant issues to hotel management.
• Provide engineering support during after-hours emergencies when required.

Qualifications

What you'll bring

• Experience leading an engineering or facilities team, ideally in a hotel or similarly complex operating environment.
• Strong practical knowledge of building services, plant and equipment maintenance, and preventive maintenance planning.
• A clear commitment to workplace safety, life safety systems, compliance and contractor management.
• The ability to organise competing priorities, contribute to projects and make sound decisions under pressure.
• Commercial awareness, including experience managing budgets, resources and energy or operating costs.
• A collaborative leadership style: you communicate clearly, build trust, coach others and work effectively with colleagues, project teams and contractors.
• Confidence adapting to changing operational needs while maintaining a focus on safe, reliable hotel operations.
• Confidence working with maintenance systems and records, including HOTSOS or comparable platforms.
• Must have unrestricted Australian Working rights
