Job summary

For the Books is seeking a Casual Bookkeeper & Payroll Assistant to join our boutique practice. This remote role is SEQ preferred, 15-25 hours per week, with flexible days and potential growth.

You’ll handle data entry in Xero, payroll processing, Dext receipts, and bank reconciliations, working with our team to ensure accuracy and timely delivery. Training provided; on-site meetings in SEQ may occur occasionally.

Qualifications

• Xero experience or several years of QBO/MYOB with willingness to learn Xero.
• Dext, Employment Hero, and/or Tanda experience a big plus.
• Some payroll experience is ideal, but we will train the right person.
• Serious attention to detail; you notice small discrepancies and won't stop until fixed.
• Strong tech skills; you learn new software quickly and look for better ways to work.
• Accuracy and speed: getting it right without taking all week.

Casual Bookkeeper & Payroll Assistant | Remote (SEQ preferred) | 15-25 hrs/week

We're a boutique bookkeeping and BAS agent practice. We specialise in working with creatives (authors, artists, makers, and the delightfully unconventional) as well as supporting all small to medium businesses. We're serious about compliance and helping clients (but not about ourselves). We're growing and need someone local(ish) who understands why getting the details right the first time is the most important task we can do.

Why this role exists:

Our clients rely on us for payroll, BAS, and clean books. Above all else, accuracy and timing matter. We want someone who is on the ball and willing to put in the work to deliver every promise on time and above expectations.

What you'll ideally be doing:

• Data entry, bank reconciliations, and day-to-day bookkeeping in Xero
• Processing payroll, including following up with clients, staff, and managers for approvals
• Working through Dext receipts and statements for clients
• Flagging anything that doesn't look right
• Working alongside our existing team members, who'll train you and review your work

What we're looking for:

• Xero experience (or several years of QBO/MYOB experience and a willingness to learn Xero)
• Dext, Employment Hero, and/or Tanda experience (a big plus)

Most importantly, we care more about how you think and how carefully you work than about how many years of bookkeeping experience you have. Sharp eyes, a curious attitude, and a reliable nature will beat a long CV for us every time.

The details:

Hours: 15-25 per week, flexible within business hours. School hours suit us perfectly. And there is always room to grow!

Days: Monday to Wednesday are a must (our busiest payroll days). Thursday and Friday are negotiable.

Location: Fully remote. However, the ideal candidate will be based in South East Queensland due to occasional in-person catch-ups (yes, including the Christmas party) and the potential of on-site days with clients as/when required

Employment: Casual to start, with permanent part-time possible for the right person.

Pay: Clerks Award rates as a minimum, with room to negotiate for the right skills and experience

This role is during business hours. It isn't suited to evening or after-hours work.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a short practical test. It's nothing scary, just a chance to show us your eye for detail.
