Job description

Boilermaker / Fabricator / Sheet Metal Worker / Coach Builder

iFab Steel is looking for boilermakers, metal fabricators, sheet metal fabricators, coach builders and highly capable tradespeople who want to build complex, one-off architectural steelwork and grow with a company that is deliberately raising its standard.

You will work across varied fabrication packages rather than repetitive production. The role is primarily workshop-based and will span detailed set‑out and geometry development, fabrication, assembly, welding, finishing coordination and pre-installation checks. As your capability grows, you may also take the lead on fabrication, contribute to project methodology and help improve how work flows through the workshop.

Key responsibilities

• Read and interpret fabrication drawings, specifications and job information; familiarity with reviewing and referring to 3D models is highly regarded.
• Set out accurately and develop complex geometry using practical methods, including fabrication from datum points and grid lines and the use of laser levels.
• Fabricate and weld mild steel and, where relevant to your background, stainless steel or aluminium components as the project requires.
• Think through interfaces, tolerances, finish requirements, lifting, transport, access and installation before they become downstream problems.
• Check your own work and participate in hold points, measurements, photos and QA evidence before work moves forward.
• Use the company job system, digital drawings, tablets, forms and communication tools as part of normal daily work.
• Willingness to learn and use appropriate AI assisted or digital tools for planning, clarification, knowledge capture and continuous improvement.
• Communicate risks, missing information, mistakes and likely delays early enough for the team to act.
• Work safely in this primarily workshop-based role, with occasional site work where required to support project delivery.
• Help recover commitments when a project falls behind by working to an agreed plan and completing your part of it, contribute to part of a team that bands together to get the job done and continue elevating each other.

About you

• A recognised trade qualification in engineering fabrication, boilermaking, sheet metal, coach building or a closely related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• Experience fabricating from drawings and checking dimensions and tolerances without constant supervision.
• A strong ability to self-regulating timing, being responsible to overall project and team success.
• Strong spatial reasoning and experience with detailed setting out, templates, transitions, curves, compound angles or other geometric development.
• MIG welding capability, with TIG, stainless steel experience viewed favourably.
• Experience with high-end work, with tight tolerances and deadlines.
• Construction site or installation experience and the ability to think about access, sequence and buildability.
• A current White Card where site work forms part of your role.
• Dogging, rigging, EWP, working at heights or forklift licences or practical experience.
• The confidence to use digital drawings, tablets, job management systems and new technology.
• A record of dependable attendance, early communication and following work through to completion.
