Job summary

HOTA, Home of the Arts in Surfers Paradise invites applications for a Part-Time Audio Visual Technician. Based at HOTA venues, you will support delivery, operation, maintenance, and presentation of AV across corporate events, conferences, performances and exhibitions.

You will install, operate, troubleshoot, and pack down presentation systems; maintain safety standards; work with clients and venue teams; require strong technical and customer-focused approach and eligibility for Blue Card if

Responsibilities

HOTA, Home of the Arts Precinct

This role will be based at HOTA, Home of the Arts. HOTA is an iconic Gold Coast destination where art, entertainment, culture and lifestyle meet. A place that locals love and visitors must-see. HOTA offers a diverse suite of venues and facilities, including a gallery, outdoor stage, indoor theatres and cinemas, function and events rooms, as well as a range of food and beverage venues including the HOTA Café, the rooftop Exhibitionist Bar and three hat Palette Restaurant.

At the heart of HOTA’s identity is a rich and diverse program: live music, theatre, dance, comedy, film, visual art exhibitions, children’s shows, community workshops, and festivals - all taking place across the array of venues.

About the Role

The Part-Time Audio Visual Technician role is responsible for supporting the delivery, operation, maintenance, and presentation of audiovisual services across HOTA’s venues, facilities and events.

Reporting to the relevant Head of Audio and working with the wider Technical, Events, and venue teams, the role contributes to the successful delivery of corporate events, conferences, presentations, functions, meetings, performances, exhibitions, and other venue activities.

The position plays a key role in providing professional audiovisual support to clients, presenters, event organisers, internal business units, and other stakeholders. This includes the setup, operation, troubleshooting, and pack down of presentation systems, audio, video, displays, conferencing technology, playback systems, and associated AV equipment.

The role requires a strong technical and customer-focused approach, with the ability to confidently operate in client-facing environments and respond to changing event requirements. As an active member of the Technical department, the AV Technician will also support general venue operations, technical setups, changeovers, and event delivery across the HOTA precinct while maintaining high standards of safety, professionalism, presentation, and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Maintain audio visual equipment, systems, infrastructure, and technical spaces in a safe and operational condition.
• Undertake routine inspections, cleaning, testing, preventative maintenance, and fault reporting of AV equipment.
• Assist with test and tag activities and ensure equipment remains compliant and fit for use.
• Support the upkeep and presentation of AV control rooms, workshops, storage areas, and technical spaces.
• Assist with equipment repairs, maintenance, configuration, and troubleshooting as directed by the relevant Technical Manager or Senior Technician.
• Identify damaged, faulty, or ageing equipment and report issues promptly.
• Maintain organised AV equipment storage and technical work areas.
• Prepare, test, clean, and return AV equipment following events, conferences, functions, and productions.
• Ensure equipment is correctly labelled, stored, maintained, and operated in accordance with departmental procedures.

Corporate & Venue AV Support:

• Assist with the setup, operation, and pack down of audiovisual systems for corporate events, conferences, presentations, meetings, functions, exhibitions, activations, and venue activities.
• Operate and support presentation systems, projectors, displays, microphones, audio systems, video conferencing, playback systems, and associated AV equipment.
• Provide professional technical support to clients, presenters, event organisers, internal business units, and other stakeholders.
• Assist clients and presenters with basic technical requirements and provide confident, professional support throughout events.
• Monitor AV systems during events and respond promptly to technical issues and changing requirements.
• Troubleshoot and resolve basic audio visual issues, escalating more complex technical issues as required.
• Support video conferencing and hybrid event requirements where required.
• Assist with venue changeovers, bump-ins, bump-outs, rehearsals, presentations, conferences, and event delivery activities.
• Contribute to the successful delivery of events by ensuring AV systems and equipment are tested, operational, and ready for use.
• General Technical & Event Support:
• Assist with the preparation, installation, operation, and removal of technical equipment across HOTA venues and facilities.
• Provide technical support to internal business units for meetings, functions, activations, exhibitions, conferences, presentations, and special events.
• Assist with general technical operations across audio, video, lighting, staging, and venue operations where required.
• Support Senior Technicians and Technical Management with event delivery requirements and operational activities.
• Assist with departmental projects, venue improvements, system upgrades, equipment installations, and operational initiatives.
• Contribute to maintaining venue readiness and ensuring a high standard of presentation for all events and activities.
• Follow safe work practices when working at heights, handling equipment, and undertaking maintenance activities.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
• Participate in hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident reporting processes.
• Comply with all Experience Gold Coast policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.

What We're Looking For

• Comprehensive knowledge of professional Audio-Visual equipment and systems.
• Experience working within live events, performing arts, entertainment, or technical venue environments.
• Ability to support the delivery of live events, productions, exhibitions, and venue operations in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to undertake equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and basic repairs.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, presentation, and operational readiness.
• Demonstrated ability to work safely in a live event environment while managing competing priorities and deadlines.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Blue Card (Working with Children Check) if required by the duties of the role.
• Entertainment Industry experience.
• Current EWP licence (or willingness to obtain).
• Current Working at Heights training.
• Current Open Driver's Licence.
• Current General Construction Induction Card (White Card).
• Electrical Test & Tag competency (desirable).
