Job description

As Associate Designer – Building Design, you will undertake and coordinate building-design work across concurrent projects, from design development through tender, construction and as-built stages, under the authority of the Design Manager and in liaison with appropriately registered internal and external practitioners. Any regulated design work, declarations, certifications or approvals will remain subject to the review, oversight and responsibility of the appropriately registered practitioner.

Key responsibilities
  • Interpret client briefs, planning constraints, site information and consultant documentation, and translate them into coordinated, buildable building-design solutions within delegated authority and in liaison with appropriately registered practitioners.
  • Develop and evaluate design options and design-development packages, including materials, buildability, performance and cost considerations, and present recommendations to clients and the project team for review and approval.
  • Prepare and coordinate plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules and specifications for design development, tender and construction, referring documents requiring review, declaration, certification or approval to the appropriately registered practitioner.
  • Coordinate structural, geotechnical, civil and building-services inputs into coherent building-design solutions, and work with the relevant consultants to identify and resolve interface and clash issues, without assuming responsibility for engineering design or other work requiring registration in those disciplines.
  • Identify applicable National Construction Code, Australian Standards and NSW planning and regulatory requirements within your area of work, and coordinate compliance analysis and responses with appropriately registered practitioners, certifiers and authorities.
  • Coordinate design matters with clients, engineers, consultants, contractors and certifiers, and explain and support design recommendations throughout delivery within delegated authority.
  • Assist the Design Manager in reviewing construction for consistency with the approved design, respond to RFIs within delegated authority, and coordinate with the responsible registered practitioner to resolve design issues identified on site.
  • Liaise with appropriately registered practitioners and, as directed, review design documentation for quality, completeness and interface coordination; identify deviations and implement resolutions under the direction of the relevant registered practitioner; and mentor junior designers within the scope of your experience and delegated authority.
About you
  • A Master of Architecture or an equivalent recognised tertiary qualification providing comparable professional-level knowledge and capabilities in building design.
  • A minimum of 2 years' relevant professional experience in building design, including responsibility for design development and the preparation and multidisciplinary coordination of tender and construction documentation within delegated authority and, under the oversight of an appropriately registered practitioner.
  • Demonstrated experience designing at the interface of building, structural and geotechnical disciplines (for example basements, retention, below-ground waterproofing or complex podium/transfer conditions).
  • Working knowledge of the National Construction Code, Australian Standards and NSW planning and regulatory requirements relevant to the role, and experience coordinating compliance matters with certifiers, authorities and appropriately registered practitioners.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate design discussions with consultants, contractors and clients within delegated authority, in liaison with registered practitioners.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit and proficiency in AutoCAD.
Highly regarded:
  • Experience within a specialist construction, structural, civil or geotechnical environment.
  • Supplementary study in structural, civil, geotechnical or construction engineering that supports multidisciplinary design coordination, without implying qualification or authority to undertake engineering work requiring registration.
  • Dynamo or related computational-design and workflow capability.
