ASC is Australia’s submarine company. We built the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines, sustain them, and are now delivering their Life of Type Extension to increase the boats’ service lives. We have also been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines – the largest and most complex industrial undertaking in Australia’s history.

Our work is interesting and meaningful, contributing directly to Australia’s national security. We offer rewarding roles that provide the opportunity to grow your career, and the flexibility to balance life and work. A career at ASC is like no other, delivering a deeper purpose we can all be proud of.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Project Manager to support the successful delivery of complex and high-value projects within the Collins Class Delivery department. This role is pivotal in ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget, while providing leadership and guidance to Project Coordinators and Administrators.

Reporting to the Project Manager, you will be accountable for delivering detailed project management and support activities across all phases of the project lifecycle. You may manage the planning, execution, and closeout of elements of a major project or oversee one or more minor projects. You will work closely with departments such as Engineering, Quality, Planning, Production, Supply Chain, PMO, and Finance to ensure alignment and readiness for execution.

Responsibilities
  • Supporting the Project Manager in planning, developing, and maintaining performance baselines, measuring progress, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Conducting project risk and opportunity reviews and managing mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinating cross‑functional inputs and ensuring resource availability for successful project execution.
  • Preparing and collating reports for weekly, monthly, and quarterly reviews, including Safely on Time data, EAC inputs, and gate review presentations.
  • Acting as Control Account Manager (CAM) for financial management of project elements or entire projects.
  • Supervising and mentoring assigned Project Coordinators and Administrators, fostering a high‑performance project culture.
  • Driving continuous improvement by identifying inefficiencies and contributing to process enhancements.
  • Ensuring compliance with WHS, EEO, and legal training requirements, with no overdue obligations.
  • Actively contributing to ASC’s Submarine Safety Culture and governance activities.
About You

You’ll excel in dynamic environments and navigate change with confidence. Agile and adaptable, you have a track record of managing complex projects in technical or asset-intensive contexts. Your collaborative approach fosters alignment and effective communication across teams. You embrace evolving circumstances and apply critical thinking to create clarity and drive progress.

Will Bring
  • Tertiary qualifications in a technical or project management discipline or equivalent experience in systems engineering, naval construction, or complex asset management.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a complex project environment at Project Engineer level (or equivalent).
  • Practical knowledge of scheduling, Earned Value Management (EVM), financial, stakeholder, and personnel management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with excellent negotiation and persuasion abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with limited supervision and sound judgment.
  • Eligibility for an Australian Defence Security Clearance (NV1) and familiarity with ITAR regulations.
  • Diploma or higher qualifications in Project Management (Desirable)
  • Membership of AIPM or equivalent (Desirable)

This role requires a current National Police Clearance, an Australian Defence Security Clearance and an ability to access protected U.S. defence technology. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances and approvals.

Whilst ASC will accept all applications for this role, as this role requires an ability to access protected U.S. defence technology, applicants holding nationality of certain foreign countries will not be eligible. To check your eligibility please visit the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency website.

  • Health and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • A diverse and supportive environment.
  • Discounts and exclusive offers from leading Australian brands.
