Engineering and Project Management Capability Manager

Join to apply for the Engineering and Project Management Capability Manager role at ASC Pty Ltd.

ASC is Australia’s submarine company. We built the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines, sustain them, and are now delivering their Life of Type Extension to increase the boats’ service lives. We have also been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build the nation’s conventionally armed, nuclear‑powered submarines – the largest and most complex industrial undertaking in Australia’s history.

Our work is interesting and meaningful, contributing directly to Australia’s national security. We offer rewarding roles that provide the opportunity to grow your career, and the flexibility to balance life and work. A career at ASC is like no other, delivering a deeper purpose we can all be proud of.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Engineering and Project Management Capability Manager to play a pivotal role in building and deploying the right people, skills, and systems to deliver on ASC’s program work scopes. Acting as a deputy to the Head of Engineering and Project Management Capability, you will lead tactical operations, workforce planning, and execution of capability development strategies that align with ASC’s long‑term objectives. This is a leadership role with significant impact on shaping ASC’s engineering and project management future.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the implementation of initiatives and plans that strengthen capability and address gaps across ASC programs in line with strategic objectives.
  • Operate as deputy to the Head of Engineering and Project Management Capability, focusing on execution and tactical operations.
  • Collaborate with workforce planning, recruitment, and learning teams to build ASC’s technical and project management capabilities.
  • Provide leadership to a multi‑disciplinary team, ensuring clear direction and performance targets.
  • Maintain a strategic perspective on business needs, risks, and opportunities to ensure ongoing success.
  • Align capability development initiatives with ASC’s corporate strategy and contractual deliverables.
  • Foster relationships with universities, education providers, and technical networks to support early‑career programmes and talent pipelines.
About You
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical discipline and project management certification (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven leadership experience in engineering project management or capability development on complex, multi‑dimensional projects.
  • Strong proficiency in project management disciplines including scope, schedule, cost, and risk management.
  • Ability to build and lead multi‑disciplinary teams, coaching and developing technical talent.
  • Strategic thinker with experience in resource prioritisation and trade‑off decision‑making.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Knowledge of shipbuilding or defence sector practices, technologies, and regulatory environments is highly desirable.

Please note: Availability for collaboration calls outside normal working hours (UK timezone) on an ad‑hoc basis may be required. Domestic and international travel may also be required on an ad‑hoc basis.

This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance to an NV1 level. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.

Whilst ASC will accept all applications for this role, as it requires access to protected US defence technology, applicants holding nationality of certain foreign countries will not be eligible.

Benefits
  • Unique and challenging work with a deeper purpose.

  • Subsidised childcare to ease the financial pressure on your family.

  • Professional development opportunities to advance your career.
  • A diverse and supportive environment where you can thrive.
  • Discounts and exclusive offers from leading Australian brands to help you save.
