Job summary

Balaclava Hotel is seeking an Assistant Manager to lead shift operations across the bar, bistro and gaming room. You’ll be on the floor, directing flow, mentoring a lively team, and building connections with regulars to maintain high service standards from open to close.

You’ll work with our venue leadership to pace shifts, resolve issues before they escalate, and bring energy, hospitality and a warm, inviting mood to every service. RSA/RSG, RMLV and Approved Managers Licence are required.

Qualifications

• Hands-on role with physical tasks (lifting/moving stock, etc).
• Supervision experience in bar, bistro or gaming room preferred.
• Must hold RSA/RSG, RMLV and Approved Managers Licence as per state requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily shift operations on the floor across bar, bistro and gaming areas.
• Mentor and manage a busy floor crew and ensure service standards from open to close.
• Partner with senior venue leadership to pace shifts and allocate staff.
• Build connections with regulars and deliver an engaging guest experience.
• Handle hiccups and maintain a safe, vibrant pub atmosphere.

If you are a driven hospitality manager who thrives in the thick of peak trade and loves the banter of an authentic suburban pub, the Balaclava Hotel offers the perfect stage for your career. From packed dinner rushes in the bistro and roaring game-day crowds in the sports bar to delivering dedicated host service in our gaming room, this role puts you right at the helm of daily shift operations.

You won't be cooped up in a back office, you'll be out front leading from the floor. Working alongside our collaborative group of Assistant Managers, you'll partner with senior venue leadership to direct shift pacing, mentor an energetic floor crew, build lasting connections with our regulars, and ensure our standards stay sharp from open to close.

A day in the life of an Assistant Manager:

• Get to know the locals so well they think you're part of the crew
• Support the Publican to keep the pub running smoothly, safely, and with a great vibe
• Learn the ropes of being a Publican while leading a team of absolute hospo legends
• Handle hiccups before they turn into headaches
• Bring the energy, the service, and the smiles every single shift

Inherent requirements:

• This is a hands-on role that involves manual handling and lifting as part of regular duties (e.g. moving stock, kegs, and deliveries). Applicants must have the ability to perform physical tasks safely and efficiently.

About you:

• You've been around the bar, bistro, or gaming room block, and maybe already done some supervising
• You've learned from great managers and now you're ready to step up
• You've got the confidence, pride, and people skills to be the face of the pub when the boss is away
• You've got a current RSA/RSG, RMLV and Approved Managers Licence as per state requirements
