Job summary

Sunset Pier is seeking an Apprentice Chef to join our café kitchen team in Brisbane. You will work with experienced chefs, gaining hands-on experience in food preparation, cooking, and kitchen operations while pursuing a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.

You will learn food safety, portion control, plating, and stock management in a busy café environment, with opportunities for ongoing employment after completing the apprenticeship.

Qualifications

• No prior commercial kitchen experience required, though desirable.
• Willingness to commence or continue a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.
• An understanding of workplace health and safety and food hygiene is advantageous.
• The right to work in Australia.
• Food Safety Supervisor training, or willingness to complete it, may be required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparation and cooking of breakfast, lunch and café meals.
• Follow recipes, portion sizes and presentation standards.
• Prepare ingredients, including chopping, peeling, measuring and basic food preparation.
• Assist with plating and maintaining consistent food quality.
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the kitchen.
• Follow food safety, storage and temperature-control procedures.
• Assist with stock rotation, labelling and inventory control.
• Help receive and store deliveries correctly.
• Keep coolrooms, freezers, benches and kitchen equipment clean and organised.
• Follow opening, closing and cleaning procedures.
• Work cooperatively with chefs, kitchen staff and front-of-house employees.
• Follow instructions and communicate any issues to the Head Chef or Kitchen Manager.
• Assist with minimising food waste and maintaining portion control.
• Complete all required training and coursework associated with the apprenticeship.
