Job summary

Australian Signals Directorate Sydney, NSW, seeks a Data Officer to manage ASD data systems ensuring accuracy and compliance with policy. You will work with programming languages and tools to manage, store and archive data, while engaging with stakeholders to respond to issues and improve processes.

The role supports the Mission Data Division’s data platforms, including AI/ML capabilities, with a focus on data governance and day‑to‑day operations.

Qualifications

• Tertiary degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Math, Physics, STEM or related.
• Experience with data management and cloud technologies is desirable.
• Contributions to technical delivery in government or policy-related areas are a plus.

Australian Signals Directorate – Sydney NSW

Mission Data (MD) Division within ASD is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD’s functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD’s mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. All roles within MD require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.

An ASD 5 & 6 Data Officer is responsible for the management and the day-to-day operations of Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) data systems ensuring accuracy, quality and compliance with policy. They will maintain a well-developed understanding of ASD’s mission and policy requirements. They will undertake research and perform data management functions to achieve results. They will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond and collaborate on issues to achieve desired outcomes.

A Data Officer will use programming languages and tools in their day to day work to manage data and information. They will analyse information structures and ensure that data is appropriately stored and archived, in line with relevant compliance considerations.

Key Duties

ASD5

• Accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility
• Interpret and provide advice within the data function area based on legislation, policy and procedures.
• Coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members.
• May be a team coach or supervise a team
• Accountable to set work priorities, allocate work, and manage workflows and performance.
• Expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on-the-job training within a work unit.

ASD6

• Work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work.
• Exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures.
• Provide detailed data management and administration technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and may contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.

• Be accountable to set work priorities and manage workflows.
• Expected to be capable of building team capability through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work unit.
• Exercise with the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve work unit outcomes.

Our ideal candidate can have industry experience, formal training or a particular domain expertise. You will have experience working with cloud technologies, with a focus on data management best-practices. Ideally, you will have demonstrated experience in data management through the use of programming languages and tools.

• Organisational Suitability Assessment – The preferred applicant will be required to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment (see Organisational Assessment section).
• Security Clearance - It is a condition of employment that applicants are willing and able to obtain and maintain the requisite security clearance for the duration of their employment with ASD.
• Health Assessment - The preferred applicant may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the Agency’s preferred medical provider.
