Job summary

NEPEAN Conveyors in Mackay, QLD invites motivated individuals to apply for the 2027 Apprentice Mechanical Fitter intake. This fixed-term apprenticeship runs for up to four years and covers assembly, disassembly, maintenance and overhaul of underground mining materials handling equipment.

You will learn to read blueprints, operate workshop tools, and work safely in a busy workshop environment while earning above-Award pay and receiving mentorship from qualified Fitters.

Qualifications

• Completion of Year 12 is required.
• Certificate in Engineering Pathways is highly regarded.
• Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn a trade.
• Ability to work in a busy workshop environment with safety in mind.

About the opportunity

This fixed-term apprenticeship runs for up to four years and is designed to support you as you learn the assembly, disassembly, maintenance and overhaul of underground mining materials handling equipment. By the end of the apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to become a qualified Fitter & Turner and build a strong foundation for a career in the mechanical trade.

You’ll gain exposure to conveyor components, gearboxes, driveline equipment, winching equipment, hydraulic power packs and hydraulic-driven equipment, while learning how to work safely and accurately in a busy workshop environment.

What you’ll learn

• How to read blueprints, drawings and specifications to understand job requirements.
• How to operate workshop tools, machinery and equipment used in mechanical fitting.
• Assembly, disassembly and overhaul of underground conveyor components, gearboxes and mechanical drive assemblies.
• Hydraulic fault finding, repair and maintenance of hydraulic power packs and related equipment.
• How to plan work, compile material lists, record job hours and support day-to-day workshop duties.
• Safe work practices, WH&S requirements and how to contribute positively in a team environment.
