Job summary

Whizdom is seeking an API Engineer in Sydney to drive end-to-end API delivery within a major Australian banking technology program. You will define requirements, document solutions, and build scalable integrations across multiple teams.

You will work with business stakeholders, developers, and delivery teams in a hybrid Sydney setting, applying modern Java/Spring skills, API design, and DevOps practices. Prior experience in banking is valued.

Qualifications

• Deliver API frameworks and integration solutions for banking sectors.
• Strong understanding of microservices design principles.
• Commercial development experience with Java 8+, Spring Framework 5.x/Boot 2.x; JUnit 5/Mockito; Postman.
• Experience with infrastructure or DevOps design.
• Experience delivering technology projects within banking.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills; test-driven development; address code quality and security.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to end-to-end delivery of the API program.
• Participate in requirements discussions with business stakeholders.
• Finalize functional specifications and interface documentation.
• Define functional requirements for new services with business teams.
• Collaborate with leads and stakeholders during reviews and sign-offs.
• Document changes within an Agile delivery environment.
• Produce API requirements, designs, and functional specifications.

• Collaborate with development teams on technical ideas and applications.
• Mentor junior consultants; support workshops and delivery engagements.

About the Opportunity

A leading global technology consultancy is seeking an experienced API Engineer to support a major Australian organisation operating in the banking and financial services sector.

This hands-on role will contribute to the end-to-end delivery of an API-focused program. You will work with business stakeholders, technical specialists, developers, and delivery teams to define requirements, document API solutions, and build robust, scalable integrations.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the end-to-end delivery of the API program.
• Participate in requirements discussions with business stakeholders.
• Help finalise functional specifications and interface documentation.
• Work with business teams to define functional requirements for new services.
• Collaborate with technical leads and business stakeholders during reviews and sign-offs.
• Document and communicate changes within an Agile delivery environment.
• Produce API requirements, designs, and functional specifications.
• Apply microservices design principles to API and integration solutions.

• Collaborate with development teams on technical ideas and applications.
• Support internal and external consultants across workshops and delivery engagements.
• Assist with the mentoring of junior consultants.

Required Skills and Experience

• Previous experience delivering API frameworks and integration solutions.
• Strong understanding of microservices design principles.
• Commercial development experience with:
