Job summary

Westpac Group’s AI Services team in Australia invites a hands-on, AI-powered full-stack Engineer to build safe intelligent systems for decision support. You’ll work across governed data, APIs, and AI workflows to deliver features within established designs and controls.

You will contribute to production-grade capabilities, ensuring safety, reliability and accountability while complying with Westpac security, privacy and Responsible AI standards.

Qualifications

• Financial Services domain AI engineering experience in financial crime protection.
• Hands-on full-stack engineering across backend, APIs, data stores and web apps.
• Experience with Go or Python, SQL, TypeScript, React and Next.js.
• Knowledge of identity, entitlements, audit, data lineage and access controls.
• Understanding of graph concepts: entities, relationships, bounded paths and evidence links.
• AI service skills across ML signals, LLMs, RAG, agents, evaluation and tool controls.
• Ability to present evidence with sources, uncertainty, status and limitations.

• Build, test, release and support features across data, services, APIs, AI workflows and user experiences.
• Preserve source references, lineage, access rules and data-quality information throughout assigned work.
• Show missing, stale, denied, incomplete and unavailable information clearly.
• Implement approved agent controls, bounded tools and evidence for material claims.
• Protect sensitive information by avoiding unnecessary copying, display or logging of personal data.
• Build automated tests, useful diagnostics and safe handling of errors, retries and recovery.

Join AI Services as a hands-on, AI-powered full-stack Engineer building safe intelligence and protection solutions.

You will work across governed data, backend services, APIs, AI workflows and user experience, delivering defined features within established designs and controls.

The systems you build will support authorised human decision-makers rather than make fraud, AML, employee, customer or operational decisions.

• Build, test, release and support features spanning data, services, APIs, AI workflows and user experiences.

Key Ingredients for Success

• Financial Services domain AI Engineering experience that has featured Financial Crime Protection.
• Hands-on full-stack engineering experience across backend services, APIs, data stores and modern web applications.
• Experience with technologies such as Go or Python, SQL, TypeScript, React and Next.js.
• Working knowledge of identity, entitlements, durable state, audit, data lineage, data quality and access controls.
• Working understanding of graph concepts including entities, relationships, bounded paths and evidence links.
• AI service skills across ML signals, LLMs, RAG, agents, evaluation, tool controls, monitoring and safe fallback.
• Ability to create clear review experiences showing evidence, sources, uncertainty, status and limitations.

This role combines full-stack delivery with sensitive data, evidence and human-review requirements. You will build systems that inform authorised decisions while keeping decision authority outside the model.

You will help deliver practical AI outcomes while applying Westpac engineering, security, privacy, Responsible AI, risk and operational resilience requirements. Approved AI tools may support delivery, but people remain accountable for design, controls, review and production decisions.

We will be focused on applications that can demonstrate production engineering outcomes delivered, the decisions you owned and how you built safety, reliability and accountability into the work.
