Job summary

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is seeking a Disability Support Specialist to provide individualised support to students with disability, leveraging assistive technologies to foster inclusive learning.

This full-time, 2-year fixed-term appointment offers a base salary of AU$108,413–AU$120,287 per year plus 17% superannuation. Applicants must meet eligibility to work in Australia and undergo compliance checks.

Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualification or demonstrated equivalent competency preferably in Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Social Work, Psychology or other appropriate degree.
• Substantial and extensive relevant or clinical experience closely related to working with people with a disability, mental health condition, or other chronic medical conditions in a range of settings.
• Knowledge of current equity and diversity issues particularly as they relate to students with disability in higher education in Australia and a working knowledge of guiding principles and legislation relating to disability.
• Demonstrated expertise in assistive technology, including the ability to assess student needs and provide advice and training on tools (e.g. screen readers, speech-to-text software, accessible formats, and alternative input devices).
• Ability to establish and review policy and procedures.

About the area

The Division of Student Life & Community sits within the UWA Education and Student Experience Portfolio and is overseen by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience). Alongside the other divisions within the portfolio, Student Life & Community plays an integral role in achieving the shared strategic goal of delivering a world-class student experience.

The Division has several core functions, including Student Health and Wellbeing, Student Conduct and Resolution, and Student Engagement and Belonging. Its services span the entire student journey, from the provision of programs and activities that support and promote access to UWA, through to progression across the study lifecycle and ultimately graduation. The Division is also responsible for delivering services that promote academic success and support student wellbeing and engagement, contributing to an enhanced student experience. Student Life & Community works closely with the Student Guild, affiliated residential colleges, and the broader UWA Education and Student Experience Portfolio.

The Student Health and Wellbeing teams facilitate a high-quality student experience by providing access to support services that assist students both academically and from a wellbeing perspective. UniAccess supports students with disabilities, health conditions, or primary caring responsibilities that may affect their capacity to study and their academic performance. Through individualised support and tailored solutions, UniAccess enables students to achieve academic success and thrive at The University of Western Australia.
