Job summary

NSW Health at Maitland Hospital is seeking an Aboriginal Health Worker to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients across Emergency, Surgical, Medical Wards, ICU and Paediatrics. You will promote culturally safe care, maintain regular contact, advocate for patients and help connect them with support services for safe discharges.

About the role and where you will be working

Join the Lower Hunter team as an Aboriginal Health Worker, Servicing Maitland, Kurri & Cessnock Hospitals supporting patients who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. You will promote culturally safe care, maintain regular contact, advocate for patients, and connect them with support services for safe discharges across Emergency, Surgical & Medical Wards, ICU, and Paediatrics.

About you

We're looking for someone with positive communication and advocacy skills who genuinely wants to support Aboriginal patients and their families when they access Lower Hunter Health services. You’ll work closely with the multidisciplinary team to help ensure care that is culturally safe, respectful, and appropriate.

You’ll be supported by the Maitland Hospital Social Work team, with cultural guidance and supervision available through the Aboriginal Health Unit, Clinical Nurse Educator – Cultural Safety, and Aboriginal Health clinicians. There are also great opportunities for ongoing education and training to help you grow professionally, aligned with your professional development goals (PD and PDR).

Requirements

This position is identified for applicants of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. Are you of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent?

Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area of care in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.

Eligible to drive in NSW and the ability to travel as required.
