Zusammenfassung

The Department of Ecosystem Management, Climate and Biodiversity, Institute of Geomatics at University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to lead an independent research group focused on advanced machine learning and deep learning for remote sensing applications, including satellite Earth Observation and 3D sensing.

You will publish regularly, secure external funding, and teach courses at undergraduate and graduate levels while mentoring

Qualifikationen

Offer Description

The Department of Ecosystem Management, Climate and Biodiversity , Institute of Geomatics is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Senior Scientist).

Extent of employment: 40 hours per week

Duration of employment: 1st of November 2026, limited to 31st of October 2032 (with the option of a permanent extension)

Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1 lit. b

Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least : € 5.014,30

(payable 14 times per year)

Responsibilities

  • The applicant is expected to establish an own research group with focus on advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques for remote sensing applications. This includes satellite-based Earth Observation as well as airborne, and terrestrial laserscanning while building at the same time a strong link to already established research activities at the institute
  • Application fields include Ecology, Biodiversity, Monitoring, Forestry and Agriculture
  • High motivation to implement her/his own vision
  • Acquire third-party-funded research projects
  • Publishing research through the preparation and submission of journal and conference papers and participating in academic conferences
  • Carry out scientific research, and be active in acquisition of external research funding
  • Teach courses at both undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc) levels, and inspire students through teaching and supervision (4 weekly semester hours)
  • Supervising and mentoring undergraduate students, postgraduate students and research associates
  • Participate in activities related to the university representation, scientific divulgation and knowledge transfer to society

Required skills and qualifications

  • Doctoral degree/PhD in Geosciences, Environmental sciences, remote sensing or computational sciences or image vision and related fields
  • Language skills: Excellent English skills, German is beneficial

Desirable skills and qualifications

  • Expertise in advanced machine learning, deep learning and image vision techniques with focus on EO data (e.g. deep convolutional neural networks, transformers, deep learning based anomaly analysis)
  • Teaching experience at university level
  • Very good programming skills
  • Strong publication record
  • Strong potential for independent and collaborative research
  • Excellent English, German language skills advantageous
  • Experience with the acquisition of external research funds
  • Experience with radiative transfer models
  • Experience with creating synthetic remote sensing data and virtual 3D scenes
