Job description

Organizational context: The Department of Safeguards is the IAEA's nuclear inspectorate, dedicated to global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. It develops and implements safeguards to ensure no diversion of declared nuclear material and no undeclared nuclear activities. This role supports the technical and scientific services division, crucial for providing state-of-the-art equipment and expertise.

Job purpose: The Instrumentation Technician supports the IAEA's nuclear verification mission by preparing and maintaining safeguards instrumentation used in nuclear facilities worldwide. Reporting to the Team Leader, this role involves the assembly, testing, calibration, installation, maintenance, and repair of critical equipment. The technician ensures the reliable operation of these systems, contributing directly to the monitoring of nuclear material and facility activities, and provides essential support to end-users within their area of responsibility.

Responsibilities:

The role involves contributing to the implementation and support of non-destructive assay and containment/surveillance systems for nuclear safeguards verification. Responsibilities include fabricating parts, assembling, testing, calibrating, installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing safeguards instrumentation. The technician will also support procurement, manage spare parts and inventories, conduct acceptance testing, handle packing and shipping, write off instruments, and update databases. Additionally, the role may involve delivering hand-on training, preparing technical documentation, and operating specialized machinery like CNC mills for part fabrication. Work may involve exposure to radioactive materials, requiring medical clearance and adherence to safety regulations.

Education:

Completion of secondary education is required. An additional qualification in electronics, technical engineering, or information technology, such as a vocational school certificate, associate degree, or equivalent, is considered an asset.

Work experience:

A minimum of four years of relevant work experience is required. This includes experience with electrical design principles and assembling mechanical and electrical instrumentation according to industrial standards and best practices.

Skills:

Proficiency in communication, analytical thinking, achieving results, client orientation, and resilience. Technical skills include electrical engineering, knowledge of electrical and mechanical instrumentation, electronic systems setup and troubleshooting, equipment operation and repair, inventory control, logistical support, and MS Office applications. Experience with CNC machinery and technical drawing is also relevant.
