Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Strategic Engagements team is responsible for World Data Lab's work with impact sector clients, including international organizations, development banks, government ministries, foundations and philanthropies. The team works globally, with people based in the United States, Nairobi, and Central Europe. This role sits in our Vienna office and works closely with both our data science team and our client facing colleagues.

ABOUT THE ROLE

World Data Lab is looking for a Data Insights Associate to join our public sector engagements team in Vienna. The main goal of the role is to increase the uptake of our data offerings (particularly our flagship product World Data Intelligence) across public sector clients.

You will work closely with our data science and business development colleagues to turn complex data into clear insights that public sector clients can act on. You will prepare analytical outputs, presentations and briefing notes, support live client engagements, and help shape how we grow our public sector work. This is also a client facing role, so joining client calls and presenting results is part of the job.

This is a good fit for someone who wants to apply strong technical skills to real policy questions in a mission driven, global organization. Candidates who are in the final stages of a Master's degree are also welcome to apply.

The role is based in Vienna and is full time. We work in a hybrid model.

THE CHALLENGE
  • Data storytelling and visualization: Use R to analyze World Data Lab datasets alongside external data sources and to build clear visual outputs. This includes finding the right datasets, producing charts that stand on their own, and building them into a narrative that fits the audience.

  • Technical and analytical project support: Provide hands on support on data focused client projects, including coding, quality assurance and quality control, and bespoke analyses built around a client question.

  • Client servicing and support: Prepare and deliver follow up materials such as decks and briefing notes, answer technical questions on client calls, and help prepare for key meetings.

  • Cross functional collaboration: Work with colleagues across our global offices to strengthen the public sector pipeline and contribute to SDG related projects, so that our insights feed directly into strategy and delivery.

YOUR PROFILE
  • Master's degree in data science, economics, statistics or a related field. Candidates who are in the final stages of their Master's are welcome to apply.

  • Strong foundation in data science, coding and quantitative analysis, with evidence that you can apply these skills to real problems. This can come from professional experience, internships, research assistant work or thesis work.

  • Proficiency in R and Excel. Experience with other programming or statistical languages is a plus.

  • Academic or professional background in public policy, economics or a related discipline that connects to public sector research and analysis.

  • Ability to turn complex findings into clear, usable insights for people who are not analysts.

  • Strong data cleaning and processing skills, in particular with large and messy datasets.

  • Good knowledge of statistical and econometric methods.

  • A quality assurance mindset and close attention to detail.

  • Confident communication and presentation skills, including in front of clients.

  • Collaborative team player, comfortable working across functions and across international teams.

  • Fluent in English. German is a plus but is not required.

OUR OFFER
  • Competitive entry level salary (incl. full social security benefits)

  • The opportunity to make an impact in a well established big data SaaS scale up.

  • Work with leading global public sector clients.

  • Be part of a diverse team of highly motivated and like minded individuals.

  • Opportunity to shape your career through a personal development plan supported by growth opportunities.

  • A dynamic, inclusive environment where collaboration with colleagues across the globe is part of everyday life.

  • Hybrid working model.

OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS
  • 1st Interview: A first meet and greet with our HR Manager and your future colleague(s) to understand your background and expectations. Technical interview with a future colleague to discuss your skills, experience and expertise.

  • 2nd Interview: Presentation of a case study to showcase your skills and to better discuss your experience and expertise.

  • Final Steps: Receive feedback and, if successful, an offer.

We keep it simple and aim to wrap up the process within 4 weeks.
