Job summary

AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna seeks a PhD candidate to drive automated research workflows and build a robotic platform for accelerated stress testing in energy materials. You will work across robotics, electrochemistry, and data science to accelerate discovery and implement data-driven processes.

You will contribute to FAIR data capture, ML-driven analyses, and publication of results in peer-reviewed venues, joining an international team within the Center for Energy.

Qualifications

• Master's studies in a technical field; completion within 3 months acceptable.
• Very good Python programming skills with data libraries.
• Experience or strong interest in laboratory automation and robotics.
• Hands-on machine learning experience with frameworks.
• Knowledge of water electrolysis or electrochemistry is advantageous.
• Understanding of Research Data Management and FAIR principles is a plus.
• Independent scientific work, critical thinking and publishing willingness.
• Fluent English; German is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Pilot end-to-end automated and autonomous research workflows within ARA-ESM.
• Develop, assemble, and operate a robotic platform for AST protocols.
• Collaborate to establish FAIR-compliant data capture and pipelines.
• Apply ML, surrogate modeling, and active learning to link tests and metrics.
• Implement closed-loop strategies to optimize testing parameters.
• Publish results in journals and present at conferences.
• Collaborate with robotics, software engineering, electrochemistry, and materials science teams.
