Job summary

Proofpoint is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the D1X pipeline team, focusing on backend data platforms powering email security products. You will design, implement, and optimize highly distributed systems with modern tech stacks and strong data quality practices.

We look for a collaborative, energetic engineer with 8+ years of experience in software or data engineering, strong Python and cloud skills, and a track record of delivering robust data-driven solutions in Agile environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field.
• 8+ years of professional software or data engineering experience with at least 4 years on cloud data platforms.
• Strong Python programming skills; proficiency in Java and Golang is a plus.
• Experience with highly distributed architectures and secured APIs (REST/GraphQL).
• Cloud experience (AWS, GCP, Azure) and familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes.
• Experience with observability tools and data quality practices.
• Strong teamwork, communication, and Agile development experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, implementation, and support of backend data pipelines and software.
• Act as technical lead, conduct design reviews, and mentor junior engineers.
• Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to translate business problems into software solutions.
• Establish data quality standards, validation frameworks, and SLA-driven alerting.
• Troubleshoot production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and drive improvements.
• Define engineering best practices including code reviews and CI/CD for data pipelines.

The Role

The Security Products and Services Group is the core of Proofpoint’s success, and you will be contributing to our efforts to do what we do, even better. As a Staff Software Engineer on the D1X pipeline team, you will be focused on the back-end systems that power our industry leading products focused on email Security. These highly sophisticated systems are responsible for protecting the corporate email platform of some of the largest brands in the world. We are looking for someone who is an outstanding team player with a positive attitude and high energy, to help us deliver state-of-the-art products.

What you’ll do

• Lead efforts to design, implement software and support systems using industry best-practices
• Serve as a technical leader and mentor—conduct design reviews, guide junior engineers, and influence the team's technical roadmap.
• Collaborate with engineers and business stakeholders to identify and implement software solutions to business problems
• Establish and enforce data quality standards—implement validation frameworks, anomaly detection, and SLA-driven alerting to ensure data reliability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and drive preventive improvements.
• Define and drive engineering best practices: code reviews, CI/CD for data pipelines, and DataOps principles

What we’re looking for

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or similar technical field of study
• 8+ years of professional software or data engineering experience, with at least 4 years focused on cloud data platforms.
• Strong Python programming skills.
• Proficiency in coding in any other language, preferably Java and Golang
• Strong understanding of highly distributed architecture
• Experience working with secured APIs (REST, GraphQL, etc)
• Cloud computing experience (AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar)
• Experience in Docker and Kubernetes, preferred
• Experience working with observability and monitoring tools (Grafana, Kibana, etc)
• Strong experience working with agile development teams
• Understanding of best practices in performance tuning
• Excellent communication, planning and organizational skills
