Organizational context: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) works globally to prevent drugs and crime from threatening security and development. Its Argentina Programme Office (POARG), part of the Andean and Southern Cone Region Office, implements national and regional projects. Currently, POARG is focused on a project in Neuquén Province to strengthen institutional capacities to combat drug trafficking at the retail level.
Job purpose: The Senior Project Support Assistant (Chemistry) provides crucial operational and logistical support for the implementation of the UNODC project in Neuquén Province, aimed at combating drug trafficking. This role is instrumental in ensuring the smooth execution of project activities by assisting with the organization of technical documents, systematizing project inputs, and monitoring the progress of programmatic tasks. The position directly contributes to strengthening the technical and institutional capabilities of the provincial Ministry of Security in their efforts against retail drug trafficking, supporting activities related to forensic analysis, training, and inter-institutional coordination.
Responsibilities: The role involves providing comprehensive support to the technical-chemistry team, including organizing and systematizing technical documents, specialized inputs, reports, and training materials related to narcotics, psychotropic substances, and chemical precursors. The assistant will help maintain updated guidance documents, protocols, and conceptual notes. Logistical support for training sessions on controlled substances, synthetic drugs, and forensic analysis is a key function. This includes preparing and following up on technical training for various stakeholders, developing training materials, and supporting the safe dismantling of illicit processing sites. Furthermore, the role supports forensic laboratory capacity building, assists in the preliminary analysis of substances, and contributes to the systematization of forensic information. Maintaining updated databases, tracking project progress, and preparing progress reports are essential. The assistant will also support institutional coordination by organizing technical meetings and participating in planning and follow-up sessions.
Education: A complete secondary education is required, with at least 5 years of relevant experience in areas such as inspection, technical auditing, regulatory control, laboratory work, substance analysis, or drug control. Alternatively, a university degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Forensic Sciences, Toxicology, or related fields is required, with at least 1 year of relevant experience. Additional technical or university training in applied chemistry, instrumental analysis, or regulatory affairs is desirable.
Work experience: Required experience includes supporting projects related to the inspection, auditing, or regulatory control of controlled substances and chemical precursors. Experience in organizing and systematizing technical reports, administrative files, and regulatory documents is essential. Support for training activities, meetings, and institutional coordination is also required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic information management tools is necessary. Desirable experience includes supporting substance identification and analysis, on-site inspections, and regulatory framework development.
