The Vice President - Property Insurance combines senior business development responsibility with technical oversight of property insurance risk. The position manages relationships with brokers, intermediaries, corporate clients, and internal business channels while ensuring that new and renewal business contributes positively to portfolio profitability. Its decisions directly influence premium growth, underwriting quality, reinsurance protection, customer retention, collections, and long-term insurance performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute strategies to grow profitable property insurance business and strengthen market presence.
- Generate new opportunities through brokers, intermediaries, corporate relationships, and internal development channels.
- Protect renewal income by maintaining strong relationships with existing clients and addressing commercial requirements proactively.
- Establish business development plans aligned with premium production, profitability, and portfolio objectives.
- Monitor portfolio performance and identify opportunities to improve pricing, business mix, retention, and underwriting results.
- Build productive relationships with brokers and clients to increase quality business flow and customer satisfaction.
- Lead negotiations for significant property insurance placements while maintaining appropriate commercial and technical discipline.
- Ensure property risks are underwritten according to approved guidelines, authority levels, and risk acceptance standards.
- Analyze exposure information, claims experience, market intelligence, and risk characteristics before making underwriting decisions.
- Determine suitable premiums, policy terms, conditions, and coverage structures for individual risks.
- Arrange appropriate reinsurance support and allocate reinsurance cessions according to established requirements.
- Seek favorable reinsurance arrangements for major or complex property exposures.
- Ensure risk inspections are completed when required to assess insurability and identify material hazards.
- Review inspection findings and recommend suitable risk improvement measures.
- Monitor outstanding premiums and coordinate collection activity to reduce overdue balances.
- Verify policy documentation for completeness and accuracy before release to relevant parties.
- Coordinate with brokers, clients, development teams, reinsurers, and other insurers to obtain information required for effective risk assessment.
- Track market conditions, competitor activity, pricing developments, and emerging insurance opportunities.
- Prepare management reports covering premium production, profitability, portfolio risks, competition, and market developments.
- Provide senior leadership with recommendations that support informed commercial and underwriting decisions.
- Develop team capability and reinforce strong standards in underwriting, customer service, risk management, and execution.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree in Commerce, Science, Arts, Business Administration, or a relevant discipline.
- Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London, or an equivalent professional insurance qualification is desirable.
- 8-12 years of progressive insurance industry experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a senior managerial position.
- Extensive knowledge of general insurance with particular expertise in Property Insurance.
- Strong understanding of property underwriting, claims, and reinsurance.
- Proven record of generating new insurance business and retaining profitable renewal accounts.
- Experience managing premium targets and improving portfolio profitability.
- Strong relationships with brokers, intermediaries, and corporate insurance clients.
- Ability to assess complex property exposures and make commercially balanced underwriting decisions.
- Knowledge of property risk inspections and risk improvement requirements.
- Practical understanding of reinsurance arrangements and cession principles.
- Strong financial and analytical skills for evaluating pricing, claims experience, and portfolio performance.
