Overview
Trackwork Engineer - Rail Design in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is a Civil Engineering opportunity for an experienced rail engineering professional who can lead and coordinate trackwork design for metro, freight, mainline rail, depot, and special track systems. This role is suited for a technically strong engineer with GCC rail experience, solid knowledge of track geometry, switches and crossings, constructability, design assurance, and multidisciplinary coordination across civil, systems, signalling, and rolling stock interfaces.
The Trackwork Engineer - Rail Design role supports the successful delivery of complex railway infrastructure by developing accurate, compliant, and constructible trackwork solutions from concept through detailed design and construction support. The position requires the ability to perform engineering calculations, review track layouts, resolve design interfaces, guide junior engineers, and ensure rail systems meet operational, safety, technical, and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and coordinate railway trackwork systems for metro, freight, mainline, depot, and special trackwork projects.
- Prepare and review track layouts, track geometry, horizontal and vertical alignments, turnout arrangements, crossovers, and depot track solutions.
- Support the design of plain line track, switches and crossings, special trackwork, rail systems, sleepers, trackform solutions, and related components.
- Gather, correlate, and assess engineering data using established procedures, design standards, and project-specific requirements.
- Perform calculations, checks, technical reviews, and routine engineering assessments to support accurate track design development.
- Independently complete primary track design elements while working within agreed project budgets, schedules, and technical expectations.
- Review rail and sleeper specifications, trackform options, alignment requirements, and operational constraints to ensure design compliance.
- Coordinate with civil, systems, signalling, rolling stock, construction, and project management teams to resolve interfaces and optimize design outcomes.
- Identify design discrepancies, technical conflicts, and alignment issues, then propose practical engineering solutions.
- Support design assurance activities, constructability reviews, interdisciplinary checks, and technical risk discussions.
- Prepare technical reports, design notes, specifications, calculations, drawings, and supporting documentation for rail projects.
- Provide guidance to entry-level and junior engineers while supporting technical quality and consistent design delivery.
- Review work produced by others and contribute to design quality, accuracy, compliance, and professional development within the team.
- Support project delivery through concept design, detailed design, tender support, construction phases, and technical clarification stages.
- Participate in meetings with internal teams, clients, contractors, and project stakeholders to provide trackwork design input.
- Apply relevant rail standards, GCC regional requirements, professional engineering practice, and project governance procedures.
- Maintain a strong focus on safety, constructability, operational performance, and long-term maintainability in trackwork design.
- Perform engineering duties with limited supervision while escalating technical risks, programme concerns, or complex design issues when required.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering from an accredited university in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Master of Science, Master of Engineering, or PhD is preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of rail experience, including experience in the GCC region.
- Strong experience in railway trackwork design for metro, freight, mainline rail, depot, and construction-stage rail projects.
- Professional engineer registration such as CEng, PE, or equivalent is advantageous.
- Relevant professional registration in Qatar, Bahrain, and UAE is required where applicable.
- Strong knowledge of track geometry, switches and crossings, crossovers, turnouts, rail specifications, sleeper specifications, and trackform design.
- Experience coordinating trackwork interfaces with civil, systems, signalling, rolling stock, and construction teams.
- Ability to produce, check, and review technical design deliverables, reports, specifications, calculations, and drawings.
- Strong understanding of design assurance, constructability reviews, technical standards, and engineering quality procedures.
- Proven ability to guide junior engineers and support technical development within a project team.
- Able to work with limited supervision while maintaining accuracy, accountability, and schedule discipline.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve new engineering problems using sound judgment and adapted standard methods.
- Professional communication skills for working with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and contractors.
- Commitment to safe design, sustainable infrastructure, technical excellence, and high-quality project delivery.
