Job summary

McDermott International, Ltd in Dubai invites professionals for a Senior Welding Engineer role to strengthen the Welding discipline and mentor junior engineers. You will lead project welding procedures, reviews, and qualification activities, ensuring compliance with codes and project requirements.

You will collaborate with the Welding team, QA/NDT, customers, and certifying authorities to resolve metallurgical and welding issues, while advancing R&D and automatic welding initiatives on

Qualifications

  • MS in Welding.
  • BS Degree (4-year degree) or IWE or EWE in Welding Engineering/Metallurgical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years directly related to Welding Engineering, Metallurgy/Materials in Fabrication/Construction Industry.
  • Welding Inspection qualification preferred.
  • TQM Education preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide deliverables from Welding engineering and running of development projects/tasks, provide metallurgical consultative service to operating groups (Fabrication / Marine).
  • Develop the Project Welding Execution Plan that defines the full scope of Weld Procedures required, schedule of qualification, quantity of electrodes and materials required for qualification.
  • Ensure proper priorities are established and review progress against project schedules.
  • Obtain review and approval of all Project Weld Procedures through communications with the Customer and Certifying Authority.
  • Collaborate with the Welding Engineering group to execute R&D developments/projects.
  • Maintain contacts with technical groups to stay updated on welding technology developments.
  • Coordinate with test houses regarding testing of welding qualification coupons.
  • Coordinate technical selection of electrodes considering properties, weldability, and economics.
  • Review Welding Consumables requirements vs. availability to ensure supply.
  • Review project schedules, material control reports, and welding consumable estimates to update the execution plan.
  • Mentor Welding Engineers on Codes, Standards, and Project requirements.
  • Assist in resolving metallurgical, welding, and quality-related problems; investigate failures and prescribe fit-for-purpose solutions.
  • Support and develop automatic/mechanized welding systems.
  • Manage welding school facility for workforce training and good workmanship practices.
  • Review vendor documents related to Welding Engineering.
  • Bid stage: review customer specs, identify bid qualifications and clarifications, welding qualification requirements.
  • Identify any special needs for execution.
  • Involve in understanding ECA-based acceptance criteria where applicable.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Provide deliverables from Welding engineering and running of development projects/tasks, provide metallurgical consultative service to operating groups (Fabrication / Marine)
  • Develop the Project Welding Execution Plan that defines the full scope of Weld Procedures required, schedule of qualification, quantity of electrodes and materials required for qualification
  • Ensure that proper priorities relevant to project schedules are established and review progress
  • Responsible for seeking the review and approval of all Project Weld Procedures through direct and indirect communications with the Customer and Certifying Authority
  • Work with the Welding Engineering group and Welding department to execute R&D developments projects/goals identified
  • Maintain contacts with technical groups to maintain updates on developments in welding technology
  • Coordinate with test houses regarding testing of welding qualification coupons
  • Co‑ordinate the technical selection of electrodes based on their physical, chemical, and corrosion properties as well as considering their weldability and economics
  • Conduct regular review of Welding Consumables requirements v/s availability to ensure availability of the same
  • Review project schedules, material control reports, and welding consumable estimates to determine changes to the welding execution plan
  • Guide Welding Engineers on day‑to‑day matters and mentor trainee welding engineers to have a better understanding of Codes, Standards, and Project requirements
  • Assist in resolving metallurgical, welding, and quality‑related problems, by investigating the cause of failures and prescribing fit for purpose
  • Assist in the support and development of automatic/mechanized welding systems
  • Manage welding school facility for the training and development of the workforce to improve the welding methodology and good workmanship practices
  • Review of vendor documents related to Welding Engineering
  • Bid stage: review and summarize customer specifications, identify bid qualifications and clarifications, project welder and procedure qualification requirements, and welding consumables requirements
  • Identify any special needs that may be needed for execution
  • Start getting involved/developing an understanding for ECA based acceptance criteria (for specific applications only)

Liaise with: Operations Manager (Fabrication / Marine), Discipline Managers, PMT, Customers, Operations /Field Engineers, QC/NDT Engineers, Client representatives, Certifying Authorities, Other Technical Agencies (e.g., TWI, DNVGL)
