Role Context
The School Librarian manages a learning environment that connects students and teachers with books, reference materials, digital resources, and reliable information. Beyond maintaining the physical collection, the role supports research, literacy development, curriculum enrichment, and responsible use of digital information. Effective library management strengthens independent learning, reading habits, academic research, and access to high-quality educational resources throughout the school.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the daily operation of the school library and maintain an orderly learning environment.
- Maintain an updated collection of books, reference materials, educational resources, e-books, and digital content.
- Classify, catalog, label, and organize new resources according to accepted library practices.
- Maintain accurate library records and ensure resources are easy for students and teachers to locate.
- Develop and apply appropriate borrowing, return, renewal, and resource-use procedures.
- Monitor overdue materials and maintain accurate circulation records.
- Review the existing collection and identify areas requiring replacement or expansion.
- Assist students in locating books, reference materials, and suitable research sources.
- Teach students how to conduct effective academic research.
- Develop information literacy skills including source selection, evaluation, and responsible use of information.
- Guide students in using online databases, e-books, and digital research platforms.
- Help learners evaluate the reliability and relevance of digital information.
- Recommend curriculum-related resources to teachers and academic departments.
- Work with teaching staff to identify materials that support classroom topics and student projects.
- Promote independent reading and encourage students to explore a broad range of literature.
- Organize book fairs, reading campaigns, competitions, and literacy activities.
- Develop initiatives that build sustained reading habits across different student age groups.
- Maintain and update the school 's digital library systems.
- Support the use of technology within library services and student research.
- Monitor resource usage and prepare relevant statistics and reports.
- Maintain records of library transactions, subscriptions, and procurement activity.
- Prepare and manage the library budget according to school requirements.
- Coordinate the procurement of books, digital resources, subscriptions, and reference materials.
- Liaise with suppliers and review new educational resources before acquisition.
- Ensure the library remains clean, welcoming, organized, and conducive to study.
- Collaborate with teachers and school leaders to strengthen the library 's contribution to teaching and learning.
- Stay informed about developments in educational technology, reading programs, and library management.
- Participate in professional development, school meetings, and literacy-related initiatives.
- Follow applicable school procedures, UAE educational expectations, and student safeguarding requirements.
Ideal Profile
The preferred candidate combines strong library organization skills with a genuine interest in literacy, education, research, and student development.
- Bachelor 's or Master 's degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field.
- Bachelor 's or Master 's degree in English may also be considered where supported by relevant teaching and library management experience.
- Previous experience as a librarian is preferred.
- School library experience is particularly advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of library management systems.
- Familiarity with cataloging, classification, circulation, and resource organization.
- Experience managing books, reference materials, e-books, and digital resources.
- Good understanding of online research tools and educational databases.
- Ability to teach information literacy and research skills.
- Strong organizational and record-management capability.
- Experience supporting literacy and reading initiatives.
