As Process Engineer – SMT PCBA, you set‑up, validate, maintain and improve all SMT equipment and related manufacturing processes, using innovative engineering solutions to address complex challenges, to secure EATON production quality standards and constantly improve customer satisfaction. This role ensures PCBA SMT manufacturing process optimization for New Product Introduction, transferred PCBA from other EATON plants or EMS, and ensures robust and stable production processes compliance with industry standards, supporting product quality, and operational excellence in line with EATON Safety rules.
The SMT Process Engineer will design SMT process through each manufacturing step, interact with R&D during design phases (manufacturability of PCB & PCBA), support Industrialization Program Manager, optimize SMT process and minimize false/true defect rates, support production in quality improvement, suggest CI and VAVE projects for productivity improvement, and ensure SMT process benchmark to enhance EATON operational productivity using technical engineering skillset.
What You’ll Do
- Develop, deliver and maintain operators and maintenance work instructions and plans for related SMT equipment processes, related to equipment operation, and PCBA specific instructions using operational technical engineering excellence frameworks
- Proactive in PCBA SMT prototypes manufacturing for NPI and transferred PCBA projects leveraging technical engineering expertise and statistical analysis tools
- Support Industrialization Program Manager in ProLaunch Manufacturing deliverables release: Process flow chart, PFMEA, PPAP, etc.
- Support Industrialization Program Manager to influence PCB/PCBA design through DFM reviews, with R&D through structured engineering reviews to optimize manufacturability, yield, and reliability
- Ensure PCBA SMT ECO/MCO effective implementation in due time
- Track and improve SMT line cycle times for each PCBA SKU, and update SMT RCCP with production manager
- Support customer audit and plant quality certification programs at SMT level
- Manage tool procurement for SMT purposes: stencils, printing support, P&P nozzles, etc.
- Program and set‑up SMT equipment for DMC lasering, solder paste printing, 3D SPI, P&P, reflow and 3D AOI
- Manage consistency of equipment programming database and standards across production lines and PCBA SKUs
- Secure side equipment process directly linked to SMT processes: stencil cleaning, SP mixer, etc.
- Act as technical interlocutor for other EATON plants and EMS
- Define CAPEX needs for PP, to improve productivity in SMT (ROI)
- Lead SMT processes technical benchmark with equipment suppliers, and exhibition attendance, for SMT technology roadmap definition
- Validate new process introduction in SMT: new components, new PCB technologies, new equipment validation
- Support production continuous improvement initiatives, SMED, Kaizen events, RIE, VSM
- Act as SMT process expert for quality crisis root cause analysis and action plan definition
- Support I4.0 initiatives on SMT equipment for digitalization and connectivity to kepware/Ignition/MES (RTPPM, traceability, SPC, etc.)
- Ensure internal training for operators and maintenance engineers on SMT equipment
- Main contact point with maintenance staff and equipment manufacturer for machine related improvement: OEE and breakdowns
- Ensure yearly process qualification: solder joint intermetallic validation (special process)
