Role Context

The Plant Operator supports reliable day-to-day process operations by monitoring equipment condition, maintaining required process parameters, and carrying out assigned field operating activities. The position works closely with supervisors, maintenance personnel, and contractors to ensure plant equipment remains available, safe, and ready for operation or maintenance. The role directly contributes to safe production, process stability, product quality, equipment reliability, and environmental compliance. Careful adherence to operating procedures and timely reporting of abnormalities are essential to preventing equipment damage, process interruptions, and unsafe conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out assigned plant operations in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Operate process machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Monitor assigned plant areas and identify abnormal equipment or process conditions.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and report defects or irregularities to the Supervisor.
  • Coordinate with the reporting Supervisor to arrange inspection, servicing, or maintenance of defective equipment.
  • Monitor process parameters and make authorized adjustments to maintain stable operations.
  • Adjust speeds, temperatures, pressures, and flow rates when required.
  • Support controlled start-up and shutdown activities according to approved operating sequences.
  • Monitor equipment behavior during process changes and report abnormal responses.
  • Prepare plant systems and equipment for maintenance intervention.
  • Ensure equipment preparation and isolation activities are coordinated with connected plant systems.
  • Support safe return of equipment to service following maintenance.
  • Receive process chemicals in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Maintain accurate chemical stock and consumption records.
  • Prepare required chemical batches for plant processes.
  • Follow approved procedures and HSE requirements when handling and preparing chemicals.
  • Maintain appropriate chemical availability to support continuous plant operation.
  • Obtain required work permits before maintenance or contractor activities commence.
  • Follow up ongoing work performed under active permits.
  • Monitor contractor activities and ensure compliance with safety requirements and site procedures.
  • Report unsafe contractor activities or deviations from approved working practices.
  • Communicate regularly with the Supervisor regarding plant conditions, operating requirements, and assigned tasks.
  • Follow operational instructions accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Carry out emergency duties as Auxiliary Fireman or Site Safety Officer when assigned.
  • Respond in accordance with the Facility Response Plan during emergency situations.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, quality, and environmental management requirements.
  • Support safe working practices designed to protect employees, contractors, facilities, and the environment.
  • Follow applicable legislative requirements and company operating controls.
  • Maintain good housekeeping throughout assigned plant and work areas.
  • Complete operating records and checklists accurately.
  • Prepare Key Performance Indicator commitment checklists for management review.
  • Provide operational information required for shift, section, and management reporting.
Ideal Profile

The successful candidate should hold a Technical Diploma in a relevant discipline or a Secondary School Certificate. A minimum of 4 years of plant operations experience within a large industrial facility in the oil and gas industry is required. Candidates should have practical knowledge of process plant equipment, field operating activities, start-up and shutdown procedures, process parameter monitoring, equipment preparation for maintenance, chemical handling, and work permit systems. Experience identifying abnormal equipment conditions and coordinating with maintenance teams is important. The position also requires strong awareness of HSE requirements, disciplined operating practices, emergency responsibilities, and effective communication with supervisors and contractors.
