Summary

The Consultant Pediatric Ophthalmology provides specialist diagnosis, medical and surgical management of eye disorders affecting neonates, infants, children and adolescents. The role involves evaluating congenital, developmental, genetic, inflammatory, traumatic and acquired ocular conditions, with a focus on preserving vision, supporting visual development and preventing long‑term visual impairment.

Education/Qualification

Qualification source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.

  • Basic medical degree from a recognized institution
  • Post‑qualification certification
    • USA: American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO)
    • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Ophthalmology (FRCSC)
    • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Ophthalmology
    • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in Ophthalmology (FRACP)
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience post‑board or equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT), Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden or Switzerland.
  • Sub‑Specialties: Minimum of 2 years of experience post‑sub‑specialty certification in those countries.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
  • Sub‑Specialties: Minimum of 4 years of experience after obtaining the sub‑specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
License
  • Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assess, diagnose and manage congenital, developmental, genetic, inflammatory, traumatic and acquired eye disorders in neonates, infants, children and adolescents.
  • Perform comprehensive pediatric eye examinations, including assessment of visual acuity, ocular alignment, binocular vision, refraction and ocular health.
  • Diagnose and manage conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity and other pediatric retinal and neuro‑ophthalmic conditions.
  • Perform pediatric ophthalmic surgical procedures, including strabismus surgery, cataract surgery and other corrective procedures when indicated.
  • Provide medical management and long‑term follow‑up for complex pediatric eye diseases and developmental visual disorders.
  • Screen and monitor infants at risk of vision problems, including premature infants and children with systemic or genetic conditions.
  • Collaborate with pediatricians, neonatologists, neurologists, geneticists, optometrists, orthoptists and other specialists to provide multidisciplinary care.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans focused on visual development, functional outcomes and quality of life.
  • Provide emergency ophthalmic assessment and management for pediatric eye injuries, infections and acute vision‑threatening conditions when required.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation, operative reports and patient records.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, research and development of pediatric ophthalmology protocols.
  • Supervise and train residents, fellows and junior medical staff.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection prevention protocols and ophthalmic care guidelines.
