The role will lead a team building high-scale consumer applications across iOS and Android while owning technical direction, delivery quality, release performance, engineering standards, and employee development.
Team Context
The Mobile Engineering Manager will lead a team of 6-10 engineers responsible for customer-facing mobile experiences spanning product discovery, ordering, payment, and real-time delivery tracking.
The position combines people leadership with sufficient technical depth to guide architecture, remove engineering blockers, and maintain high standards across the mobile codebase.
Working closely with product managers, designers, backend engineers, platform teams, and infrastructure specialists, the manager will help the team deliver reliable improvements at a sustainable pace.
The engineering culture follows collaborative development practices influenced by eXtreme Programming, including test-driven development, pair programming, trunk-based development, and continuous delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a multidisciplinary team of iOS and Android engineers through planning, development, testing, release, and post-launch improvement.
- Own the reliable delivery of customer-facing mobile features used across discovery, ordering, payments, and delivery tracking.
- Set clear engineering priorities while balancing product value, technical feasibility, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- Guide architectural decisions involving modularisation, dependency injection, reactive programming, state management, and navigation patterns.
- Evaluate native and cross-platform approaches based on scale, performance, user experience, and development efficiency.
- Maintain close technical awareness of the codebase without becoming the team’s primary daily contributor.
- Remove technical blockers and support engineers in resolving complex implementation or production issues.
- Establish and improve automated testing practices across unit, integration, interface, and release validation.
- Promote continuous integration and continuous delivery for mobile applications.
- Own mobile release quality, deployment cadence, feature flagging, staged rollouts, and rollback readiness.
- Monitor crash rates, application performance, launch times, stability indicators, and customer experience metrics.
- Use delivery and quality data to improve cycle time, test coverage, onboarding efficiency, and team health.
- Partner with product managers and designers to shape roadmaps and convert customer needs into achievable technical plans.
- Coordinate dependencies with backend, platform, cloud, security, and infrastructure teams.
- Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, career discussions, performance reviews, and development planning.
- Coach engineers through pairing, technical reviews, mentoring, and structured feedback.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, team composition, and long-term capability development.
- Create an inclusive environment that encourages technical ownership, collaboration, experimentation, and accountability.
- Contribute to mobile engineering standards and shared practices across talabat.
- Communicate delivery risks, architectural decisions, dependencies, and progress clearly to stakeholders.
- Participate in incident reviews and implement preventive improvements after production issues.
- Ensure mobile experiences remain responsive, accessible, stable, secure, and easy to use.
Success Measures
- During the first 90 days, understand the mobile architecture, team delivery rhythm, product priorities, and key stakeholder relationships.
- Within six months, the team should be shipping incremental customer value consistently while showing measurable improvement in at least one area such as cycle time, automated test coverage, onboarding speed, release stability, or engineer satisfaction.
- Within twelve months, the manager should have influenced the technical roadmap, supported at least one engineer toward a meaningful career milestone, and become a trusted technical and delivery partner to product and design leadership.
Ideal Profile
- Minimum 6 years of hands‑on mobile engineering experience across iOS, Android, or cross‑platform development.
- At least 2 years of experience managing mobile engineering teams.
- Proven responsibility for hiring, performance management, employee development, and career progression.
- Deep understanding of mobile application architecture and engineering trade-offs.
- Ability to compare native and cross-platform development approaches objectively.
- Strong knowledge of modular and monolithic architecture, dependency management, navigation, and state‑management patterns.
- Experience delivering mobile applications serving more than 100000 daily active users.
- Strong focus on application performance, reliability, accessibility, and customer experience.
- Experience building an automated testing culture within a mobile engineering team.
- Practical knowledge of mobile CI‑CD pipelines and release automation.
- Experience with feature flags, gradual rollouts, deployment monitoring, and release recovery.
- Confidence making technical decisions when requirements or data remain incomplete.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast‑moving, iterative, and customer‑data‑led environment.
- Strong coaching, communication, stakeholder management, and organizational skills.
- Comfortable remaining technically engaged while delegating implementation ownership to engineers.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with test‑driven development, pair programming, mob programming, or trunk‑based development.
- Familiarity with Domain‑Driven Design or event‑driven architecture.
- Practical knowledge of Swift, SwiftUI, Kotlin, or Jetpack Compose.
- Experience developing mobile applications for e‑commerce, food delivery, grocery delivery, or marketplace platforms.
