Role Context
The Head of Department - Science will join the Academic Leadership Team of a British curriculum school in Dubai and lead the Science department with a focus on curriculum quality, teaching standards, departmental planning, teacher development and student progress. The role requires strong leadership, lesson monitoring, academic planning, subject expertise in Chemistry or Physics, and familiarity with UAE teaching and learning expectations. The successful candidate must be currently available in the UAE.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Science department within a British curriculum school environment.
- Work closely with Science teachers to enhance subject knowledge, pedagogy, lesson delivery and instructional practice.
- Support teachers in improving classroom strategies so that student learning outcomes and academic progress are strengthened.
- Lead and contribute effectively to departmental planning, curriculum mapping, assessment planning and whole‑school academic initiatives.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to support academic improvement plans and raise teaching and learning standards.
- Ensure teaching practices align with the UAE framework for teaching and learning and maintain a minimum standard of good in all lessons.
- Monitor, evaluate and support teaching quality across the Science department through observations, feedback, coaching and review.
- Support teachers in planning engaging lessons that develop scientific knowledge, inquiry skills, practical understanding and examination readiness.
- Review student progress data, identify learning gaps and guide intervention strategies to improve attainment and progress.
- Maintain strong department documentation including schemes of work, lesson planning records, assessment evidence, progress reports and improvement plans.
- Mentor Science teachers and promote consistent, high‑quality classroom practice across the department.
- Support inspection readiness through accurate records, strong curriculum evidence and improved teaching standards.
- Promote collaboration, professional accountability and shared best practices within the Science department.
- Communicate professionally with students, parents, teachers, senior leaders and wider school stakeholders when required.
- Undertake other duties related to departmental leadership, academic quality and school improvement as assigned.
Ideal Profile
- Master of Science in Chemistry or Physics is required.
- Bachelor of Education qualification is an advantage.
- Distance learning or open university degrees will not be considered.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an academic leadership role within a British curriculum school in the UAE is required.
- Strong subject knowledge in Science, especially Chemistry or Physics.
- Proven track record of improving teaching, learning and student outcomes.
- Strong understanding of the British curriculum and Science education standards.
- Familiarity with the UAE framework for teaching and learning is required.
- Ability to lead, mentor, support and inspire a team of Science teachers.
- Strong experience in lesson observation, teacher feedback, academic planning and departmental improvement.
- Excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
- Strong communication, leadership, organization and interpersonal skills.
