Overview
Finishing Machine Operator – Print Production will manage the final stages of printed product manufacturing, converting printed sheets and materials into completed books, brochures, cartons, bags, and other finished items. The role requires accurate machine setup, close attention to production specifications, quality inspection, and safe handling of automated equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate Kolbus perfect binding machines according to job specifications, paper type, binding requirements, and production quantities.
- Operate Muller Martini saddle stitching equipment while maintaining accurate stitching, trimming, and page alignment.
- Configure folding machines for different fold patterns, sheet sizes, paper weights, and finishing requirements.
- Operate sewing and Wohlenberg gathering machines used in bookbinding and print finishing processes.
- Set cutting machines according to approved dimensions, layouts, and production instructions.
- Prepare automatic die‑cutting equipment for cartons, printed sheets, labels, and other converted products.
- Configure foiling and embossing machines according to artwork, plate position, temperature, pressure, and material specifications.
- Set up Brausse folder gluer equipment for accurate folding, gluing, and finished product formation.
- Operate Champion bag fabrication machines based on bag dimensions, substrate type, sealing requirements, and production targets.
- Load materials correctly and adjust machine settings to maintain stable production speed and output quality.
- Monitor binding strength, stitching accuracy, folding precision, glue application, cutting alignment, and finishing consistency.
- Carry out visual and manual quality checks throughout each production run.
- Compare completed products with approved samples, job cards, dimensions, and finishing specifications.
- Identify defects including loose binding, incorrect folds, weak stitching, poor foil transfer, misalignment, and uneven cutting.
- Make safe operational adjustments when quality variation is detected.
- Record production output, material usage, rejected quantities, machine stoppages, and quality concerns.
- Perform routine machine cleaning and keep work areas free from paper waste, adhesive residue, and production debris.
- Follow preventive maintenance schedules and complete assigned operator‑level maintenance tasks.
- Check guards, sensors, rollers, blades, feeders, belts, and other operating components before production.
- Identify mechanical faults, feeding problems, jams, unusual sounds, or repeated misfeeds.
- Escalate technical issues promptly to the foreman or maintenance team.
- Follow safety procedures during machine operation, adjustment, cleaning, and material handling.
- Support production targets by minimizing setup time, reducing waste, and maintaining continuous machine availability.
Ideal Profile
- Practical experience operating print finishing, binding, converting, or packaging machinery.
- Familiarity with Kolbus perfect binders, Muller Martini saddle stitchers, or comparable equipment.
- Experience with folding, gathering, sewing, cutting, die‑cutting, foiling, embossing, and gluing processes.
- Ability to interpret job cards, production specifications, measurements, and approved product samples.
- Good understanding of paper, board, adhesives, foil, and other printing materials.
- Ability to adjust machine settings according to material thickness, dimensions, and required finishing quality.
- Strong attention to alignment, folding accuracy, stitching, cutting, binding strength, and visual presentation.
- Basic mechanical awareness for identifying faults, jams, feeding issues, and worn components.
- Ability to perform routine cleaning and follow preventive maintenance instructions.
- Comfortable working in a target‑driven production environment with changing job requirements.
- Good coordination and communication skills when working with supervisors, quality inspectors, and maintenance personnel.
