A Civil Draughtsman is responsible for preparing detailed technical drawings, shop drawings, as-built drawings, and drafting documentation for civil and structural construction works in accordance with approved designs, specifications, and project requirements.

The role supports engineering and site teams by converting design concepts and engineering data into accurate and coordinated technical drawings required for construction execution and approvals.

Typically reports to the Technical Manager, Senior Engineer, or Design Coordinator.

Job Description

The Civil Draughtsman prepares and updates construction drawings, coordinates drafting activities with engineering teams, and ensures that all drawings are properly revised, controlled, and issued according to project requirements.

This role requires strong technical drafting skills, understanding of construction methods, engineering drawing standards, and proficiency in AutoCAD and related drafting software.

Core Responsibilities

1. Preparation of Technical Drawings

• Prepare civil and structural shop drawings
• Produce detailed construction drawings based on engineering designs
• Prepare layouts, sections, elevations, and detail drawings
• Modify drawings based on engineering comments and site requirements
• Ensure drawings comply with project specifications and standards

2. Shop Drawing Coordination

• Coordinate with Site Engineers and Technical Office teams
• Incorporate consultant comments into revised drawings
• Ensure coordination between architectural, structural, and MEP drawings
• Resolve drawing conflicts and discrepancies
• Maintain drawing consistency and accuracy

3. As-Built Drawings Preparation

• Update drawings based on actual site execution
• Prepare as-built drawings for project handover
• Coordinate with surveyors and site engineers for dimensional verification
• Ensure all revisions are accurately reflected in final documentation

4. Drafting Documentation Control

• Maintain drawing registers and revision logs
• Ensure proper filing and distribution of drawings
• Track drawing revisions and approvals
• Archive superseded drawings according to company procedures
• Ensure latest approved drawings are issued to site teams

5. Quantity & Technical Support

• Assist engineers in quantity take-offs from drawings
• Support preparation of technical submittals when required
• Provide drafting support during planning and coordination meetings
• Assist in preparation of material cutting lists and detailing

6. Quality & Standards Compliance

• Ensure drafting complies with engineering and company standards
• Follow CAD standards, layer management, and naming conventions
• Verify dimensions and technical details before issuing drawings
• Ensure proper scale and drawing accuracy
• Minimize drafting errors and revisions

7. Coordination & Communication

• Coordinate with consultants and subcontractors regarding drawing comments
• Attend technical coordination meetings when required
• Communicate technical drafting issues to engineers
• Support construction teams with drawing clarifications
• Coordinate with BIM team when applicable
• Strong knowledge of civil and structural drafting principles
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and drafting software
