Role Context
The Consultant Psychologist - Psycho-Oncology will address the emotional, psychological, behavioral, and family challenges that can accompany cancer diagnosis and treatment. The role extends across diagnosis, active treatment, recovery, survivorship, disease progression, and palliative stages where applicable. Working alongside oncologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the psychologist will help patients manage distress, strengthen coping strategies, maintain treatment engagement, and preserve psychological well-being throughout complex clinical journeys.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments for patients receiving oncology and other complex medical care.
- Evaluate emotional functioning, coping capacity, behavioral concerns, psychosocial stressors, and psychological risk.
- Assess anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, trauma symptoms, and cancer‑related psychological distress.
- Identify psychological factors affecting treatment adherence, decision‑making, relationships, and quality of life.
- Develop individualized psychological treatment plans according to clinical findings and patient needs.
- Provide evidence‑based individual psychotherapy to patients experiencing cancer‑related emotional difficulties.
- Deliver supportive psychological counselling throughout diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and survivorship.
- Provide family counselling when illness affects relationships, communication, caregiving, or family functioning.
- Support patients adapting to changes in physical health, body image, independence, fertility, employment, and daily life.
- Help patients manage fear of recurrence, treatment uncertainty, medical procedures, and ongoing surveillance.
- Provide interventions for anxiety associated with investigations, treatment, hospitalization, and disease progression.
- Support patients experiencing depressive symptoms, loss of motivation, emotional withdrawal, or reduced quality of life.
- Address adjustment disorders associated with cancer diagnosis or major changes in health status.
- Provide trauma‑informed psychological care where illness or treatment has resulted in significant psychological distress.
- Support patients and families experiencing anticipatory grief, loss, and bereavement.
- Provide psychological assistance to individuals coping with chronic or life‑threatening illness.
- Deliver crisis intervention when patients present with acute psychological distress or significant deterioration.
- Conduct appropriate psychological risk assessments and arrange escalation or referral when specialist psychiatric intervention is required.
- Coordinate psychiatric referrals when medication evaluation or additional mental health treatment is indicated.
- Collaborate closely with oncologists regarding psychological factors influencing cancer treatment and recovery.
- Work with physicians and nursing teams to integrate psychological needs into overall clinical care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary oncology meetings and complex case discussions.
- Contribute psychological perspectives to individualized cancer treatment and supportive‑care planning.
- Assist healthcare teams in communicating sensitively with distressed patients and families.
- Educate patients about emotional responses to cancer and practical coping techniques.
- Teach relaxation, emotional regulation, stress management, and adaptive coping strategies where appropriate.
- Support caregivers experiencing psychological strain associated with prolonged illness and treatment.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely psychological assessments, therapy notes, treatment plans, and follow‑up records.
- Protect patient confidentiality and comply with professional ethical requirements and UAE healthcare standards.
- Monitor therapeutic progress and modify psychological interventions according to patient response.
- Contribute to psycho‑oncology service development and psychologically informed patient‑care pathways.
- Participate in clinical audit, case review, quality improvement, and continuing professional development activities.
- Maintain current knowledge of psycho‑oncology, behavioral medicine, trauma‑informed care, grief interventions, and evidence‑based psychotherapy.
Ideal Profile
- Master 's or Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or a relevant recognized discipline.
- Valid DHA professional license, eligibility, or ability to obtain appropriate authorization to practice in Dubai.
- Proven professional experience working as a Clinical Psychologist.
- Previous experience supporting oncology patients is required or strongly preferred.
- Practical knowledge of psycho‑oncology and cancer‑related psychological distress.
- Strong competence in psychological assessment and clinical formulation.
- Experience delivering evidence‑based individual psychotherapy.
- Ability to provide effective family counselling and caregiver support.
- Strong experience addressing anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, trauma, grief, and bereavement.
- Comfortable supporting patients during serious, chronic, or life‑threatening illness.
- Experience working with patients at different stages of cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and survivorship.
- Ability to conduct crisis assessment and arrange appropriate escalation when required.
