Overview
Consultant Physician – Pediatric Anesthesia is a senior hospital‑level position that supports advanced pediatric surgical and critical care services in a tertiary care centre. The role involves safe anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children and adolescents across elective, emergency, diagnostic and high‑risk procedures. It includes peri‑operative planning, emergency anesthesia response, teaching, research and clinical governance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive anesthesia care for neonates, infants, children and adolescents undergoing elective and emergency procedures.
- Develop individualized anesthetic plans based on patient history, age, developmental stage, surgical requirements, comorbidities and peri‑operative risk.
- Conduct pre‑anesthesia assessment, risk stratification, consent discussions and preparation for pediatric surgical and diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor and manage pediatric patients throughout the peri‑operative period, including induction, maintenance, emergence and post‑anesthesia recovery.
- Provide safe airway management, ventilation support, hemodynamic monitoring, pain control and sedation planning.
- Support anesthesia care for complex, high‑risk, neonatal and pediatric intensive‑care cases requiring advanced clinical judgment.
- Participate in pediatric code blue, resuscitation events, critical‑care response and urgent stabilization pathways.
- Collaborate closely with pediatric surgeons, intensivists, neonatologists, emergency physicians, nurses, recovery teams and allied health professionals.
- Supervise and mentor junior anesthetists, residents, fellows, nurses and anesthesia support staff during clinical care and training activities.
- Contribute to departmental teaching, pediatric simulation training, emergency drills and case‑based learning.
- Support quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews and patient safety programmes.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, pediatric anesthesia standards, SCFHS requirements for Saudi Arabia‑based clinical service and evidence‑based practice.
- Maintain accurate anesthesia records, peri‑operative notes, recovery plans, procedure documentation and follow‑up recommendations.
- Engage in clinical research, continuing medical education, academic activity and service improvement within pediatric anesthesia.
Ideal Profile
- Medical degree such as MBBS, MD or equivalent from a recognised institution.
- Completed residency training in anesthesiology.
- Fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology from a recognised institution.
- Board certification such as American Board, UK CCT, Canadian FRCP or equivalent recognised qualification.
- Minimum 2–5 years of post‑fellowship experience in pediatric anesthesia.
- Eligible for consultant classification by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties for Saudi‑Arabia‑based clinical service.
- Expertise in neonatal anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, peri‑operative care, airway management and emergency response.
- Experience in neonatal and pediatric intensive‑care settings is an advantage.
- Familiarity with advanced monitoring systems, anesthesia technologies, pediatric safety protocols and high‑acuity surgical environments.
- Excellent English communication skills are required; Arabic language ability is an advantage.
- Strong crisis management, clinical documentation, leadership, teaching and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
