Job description

Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Surgeon will provide specialist surgical management for children requiring elective, emergency, and complex operative intervention. The role spans neonatal emergencies, congenital abnormalities, abdominal and thoracic conditions, pediatric tumors, trauma, and other surgical disorders requiring consultant-level expertise. The consultant will work closely with neonatology, pediatric intensive care, anesthesiology, radiology, oncology, nursing, and allied healthcare teams to coordinate safe surgical pathways from diagnosis and preoperative preparation through surgery, recovery, and long-term follow-up.

• Diagnose and manage congenital, acquired, traumatic, abdominal, thoracic, and other pediatric surgical conditions.
• Perform elective and emergency surgical procedures for infants, children, and adolescents.
• Manage neonatal surgical emergencies and congenital malformations requiring urgent or planned intervention.
• Provide consultant-level assessment for complex pediatric surgical referrals.
• Develop individualized preoperative plans based on age, diagnosis, imaging, clinical stability, and surgical risk.
• Coordinate perioperative care with anesthesiologists, neonatologists, pediatric intensivists, radiologists, and other specialists.
• Perform appropriate surgical procedures for abdominal and thoracic pediatric conditions.
• Participate in the surgical management of pediatric tumors in collaboration with oncology and multidisciplinary teams.
• Provide emergency coverage for pediatric trauma and acute surgical presentations.
• Assess postoperative recovery and manage complications, pain control, wound care, nutrition, and further treatment needs.
• Provide inpatient and outpatient follow-up for pediatric surgical patients.
• Review imaging, laboratory findings, pathology results, and other investigations relevant to surgical planning.
• Counsel parents and families regarding diagnosis, surgical options, potential risks, expected outcomes, and postoperative care.
• Maintain accurate records covering consultations, operative reports, treatment plans, complications, and follow-up.
• Participate in clinical audits, research, teaching, quality improvement, and continuing medical education activities.
• Support infection prevention, surgical safety, and evidence-based standards across pediatric surgical services.

Ideal Profile

MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution. Board Certification or Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery. Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in Pediatric Surgery. Previous experience within a tertiary care or academic hospital is strongly preferred. Strong expertise in neonatal surgery and complex pediatric surgical procedures. Experience managing congenital abnormalities, abdominal disorders, thoracic disease, trauma, and emergency surgical cases. Exposure to minimally invasive pediatric surgery is advantageous. Experience working closely with neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care teams is highly desirable. Academic teaching, clinical research, publication, or fellowship supervision experience is preferred. Strong surgical judgment when managing unstable, high-risk, or anatomically complex pediatric patients. Excellent communication and family counseling skills. Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural healthcare teams. Eligibility for appropriate consultant-level medical licensing in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
