The Consultant Pediatric Surgeon will manage a broad spectrum of congenital, acquired, traumatic, and emergency surgical conditions affecting newborns, children, and adolescents. The position combines complex operative care, neonatal surgical expertise, emergency decision-making, perioperative management, and close collaboration with pediatric subspecialties. Through timely diagnosis, precise surgical intervention, and structured follow-up, the consultant will contribute directly to safer procedures, improved recovery, and stronger long-term outcomes for pediatric patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and manage congenital and acquired surgical conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents.
- Assess pediatric patients presenting with abdominal, thoracic, oncological, traumatic, and other surgically treatable conditions.
- Perform elective pediatric surgical procedures according to clinical indications and approved privileges.
- Provide emergency surgical intervention for acute pediatric conditions requiring urgent operative management.
- Manage neonatal surgical cases involving congenital malformations and complex newborn emergencies.
- Evaluate infants with gastrointestinal, abdominal wall, thoracic, and other congenital abnormalities requiring surgical treatment.
- Provide consultant-level inpatient and outpatient pediatric surgical consultations.
- Conduct detailed preoperative assessment and determine appropriate operative or non-operative management.
- Develop individualized perioperative treatment plans based on age, diagnosis, physiological status, and surgical risk.
- Deliver structured postoperative management covering pain control, nutrition, wound care, infection prevention, and recovery monitoring.
- Identify and manage postoperative complications promptly and coordinate escalation of care when required.
- Participate in pediatric trauma services and provide emergency coverage for injured children.
- Work closely with neonatologists when managing premature or critically ill newborns requiring surgical intervention.
- Collaborate with Pediatric Intensive Care teams for perioperative and postoperative management of high-acuity patients.
- Coordinate with anesthesiologists, radiologists, oncologists, gastroenterologists, and other pediatric subspecialists.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences for complex congenital, oncological, neonatal, and trauma cases.
- Perform minimally invasive pediatric surgical procedures where appropriate to training, experience, and clinical privileges.
- Counsel parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, surgical options, procedural risks, expected outcomes, and recovery plans.
- Maintain accurate operative reports, consultation notes, treatment plans, discharge documentation, and follow-up records.
- Follow infection control protocols, surgical safety procedures, and recognized pediatric perioperative standards.
- Participate in clinical audits, morbidity reviews, quality improvement, and patient-safety initiatives.
- Contribute to research, teaching, resident supervision, and continuing medical education.
- Support service development and the continuous improvement of pediatric surgical pathways.
Ideal Profile
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
- Board Certification or Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery.
- Appropriate UAE Consultant license, eligibility letter, or eligibility to obtain the required license.
- Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in Pediatric Surgery.
- Previous practice within a tertiary-care or academic hospital environment is strongly preferred.
- Advanced experience managing neonatal surgical cases and complex congenital conditions.
- Strong expertise in elective and emergency pediatric surgical procedures.
- Experience treating abdominal, thoracic, oncological, and traumatic pediatric conditions.
- Proven ability to manage critically ill surgical patients in collaboration with Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care.
- Experience in minimally invasive pediatric surgery is advantageous.
- Strong exposure to pediatric trauma care and emergency surgical services.
- Excellent operative judgment and ability to make timely decisions in high-acuity situations.
- Experience working effectively with multidisciplinary pediatric teams.
- Academic, research, teaching, or clinical audit experience is preferred.
- Strong communication skills when counselling parents, caregivers, and young patients.
- Ability to work effectively within a multicultural healthcare environment.
