Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Surgeon is responsible for providing specialist surgical assessment, treatment and follow-up for pediatric patients across a broad range of conditions. The role combines direct clinical care with leadership responsibilities, including multidisciplinary treatment planning, supervision of junior doctors and contribution to departmental quality standards. Complex pediatric surgery requires coordinated decision-making involving anesthesia, neonatology, pediatrics, intensive care, radiology and other specialist services. The consultant therefore plays a central role in ensuring safe surgical pathways, timely intervention and continuity of care from diagnosis through recovery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess pediatric patients requiring surgical evaluation across outpatient, inpatient and emergency settings.
  • Provide operative care to neonates, infants, children and adolescents within approved pediatric surgery privileges.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures relevant to pediatric surgical practice.
  • Develop individualized surgical treatment plans based on clinical findings and multidisciplinary input.
  • Conduct regular ward rounds and review postoperative progress, complications and recovery milestones.
  • Coordinate complex cases with pediatrics, neonatology, anesthesia, intensive care, radiology and other specialties.
  • Provide timely surgical consultations for referred pediatric patients.
  • Participate in emergency and on-call coverage according to departmental schedules.
  • Respond promptly to urgent pediatric surgical conditions requiring immediate assessment or intervention.
  • Maintain accurate and complete clinical documentation for consultations, procedures and follow-up care.
  • Ensure medical records meet hospital, regulatory and professional standards.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, dignity and rights throughout the care process.
  • Apply established patient safety, infection control and clinical governance requirements.
  • Supervise junior doctors and other members of the medical team involved in pediatric surgical care.
  • Participate in clinical teaching, case discussions and professional development of junior staff.
  • Contribute to performance evaluation and competency development where assigned.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and multidisciplinary case conferences.
  • Support clinical audits, morbidity reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Review surgical outcomes and contribute to improvements in departmental protocols and patient pathways.
  • Engage in continuing medical education to maintain current knowledge of pediatric surgical techniques and standards.
  • Participate in research projects, publications or scientific presentations when appropriate.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to innovation in pediatric surgical care.
  • Maintain professional communication with patients, parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, procedures, risks and expected outcomes.
  • Coordinate referrals to other specialties when additional expertise is required.
Ideal Profile

The role requires a recognized medical degree followed by accredited residency and fellowship training in Pediatric Surgery. Candidates must hold board certification in Pediatric Surgery through a recognized authority such as the American Board, Royal College or an equivalent specialist certification pathway. A minimum of seven years of professional experience after specialization is required, including at least two years in a tertiary-care environment managing complex pediatric surgical cases. The successful consultant should demonstrate strong operative judgment, leadership capability and the ability to make high-level clinical decisions in both scheduled and emergency situations. Experience supervising junior medical staff and participating in teaching, audit and quality improvement activities is important for the seniority of this appointment.
