Responsibilities

Role Context The Consultant - Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine will assess and manage children and adolescents living with neurological, developmental, orthopedic, congenital, and acquired disabilities. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of childhood development, functional assessment, spasticity management, mobility, assistive technology, and long-term rehabilitation planning. Working closely with families and a broad rehabilitation team, the consultant will help each patient achieve the highest practical level of independence and participation in daily life.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consultant-level assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for pediatric patients with complex rehabilitation requirements.
• Develop individualized and measurable rehabilitation plans in partnership with children, families, caregivers, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Manage conditions including cerebral palsy, developmental delay, neuromuscular disorders, spina bifida, pediatric stroke, brain injury, spinal cord disorders, congenital conditions, and genetic disorders.
• Assess children with musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions, limb deficiencies, gait abnormalities, mobility disorders, spasticity, and movement disorders.
• Evaluate tone, posture, strength, balance, coordination, pain, contractures, weakness, and functional limitations.
• Provide pharmacological and interventional treatment for spasticity and dystonia according to clinical indication and professional credentialing.
• Perform botulinum toxin injections for pediatric spasticity where appropriately trained and authorized.
• Conduct detailed functional and mobility assessments and recommend suitable wheelchairs, orthotics, mobility devices, and assistive technologies.
• Review gait patterns and help define treatment strategies involving therapy, orthotic intervention, medical management, or specialist referral.
• Coordinate rehabilitation programs incorporating physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychology, rehabilitation nursing, social work, orthotics, and prosthetics.
• Monitor functional outcomes and modify treatment goals as the child 's condition, development, and rehabilitation needs change.
• Provide clear counselling and practical education to parents and caregivers regarding rehabilitation goals, expected outcomes, home programs, and long-term care.
• Coordinate clinical management with pediatricians, pediatric neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and other relevant specialists.
• Support adolescents transitioning from pediatric rehabilitation into appropriate adult rehabilitation services.
• Participate actively in multidisciplinary case conferences, rehabilitation planning meetings, and complex patient reviews.
• Maintain accurate assessment records, procedure documentation, rehabilitation plans, progress notes, and follow-up information.
• Contribute to clinical audits, rehabilitation quality improvement, research activity, teaching, and continuing medical education.
• Supervise and mentor residents, junior physicians, therapists, and allied healthcare professionals involved in pediatric rehabilitation.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS, MBChB, MD, or an equivalent recognized medical qualification.
• Recognized postgraduate qualification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation or Rehabilitation Medicine.
• Board Certification or an equivalent specialist qualification is required.
• Additional fellowship or structured training in Pediatric Rehabilitation is highly desirable.
• Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for the appropriate medical license.
• Significant post-specialty experience at consultant level in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
• Strong experience managing children with complex neurological, developmental, musculoskeletal, and functional conditions.
• Practical expertise in cerebral palsy, neurorehabilitation, gait disorders, and pediatric spasticity management.
• Experience with botulinum toxin treatment and rehabilitation procedures is advantageous.
• Previous work within a multidisciplinary pediatric rehabilitation service or tertiary-care setting is preferred.
• Strong understanding of pediatric growth, development, disability, functional outcomes, and long-term rehabilitation requirements.
• Excellent communication skills when working with children, parents, caregivers, physicians, therapists, and rehabilitation professionals.
• Ability to provide clinical leadership while maintaining a collaborative, family-centred approach to care.
