Job Overview

The Consultant Ophthalmologist – Pediatric and Uveitis will provide advanced diagnostic, medical, and surgical eye care for children and patients with complex ocular inflammatory disorders. This specialist ophthalmology position is based in Abu Dhabi but recruited from Dubai. The role requires fellowship‑level expertise in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Uveitis and Ocular Immunology, or a closely related subspecialty. The successful consultant will manage complex cases, perform advanced ophthalmic procedures, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to teaching, research, and clinical service development.

Role Summary

The Consultant Ophthalmologist – Pediatric and Uveitis will diagnose and manage pediatric eye diseases, strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, childhood glaucoma, retinal conditions, uveitis, and complex ocular inflammatory disorders. The physician will deliver outpatient, inpatient, surgical, and long‑term follow‑up care using evidence‑based ophthalmology practices, working closely with pediatricians, rheumatologists, retinal specialists, neurologists, geneticists, anesthesiologists, orthoptists, optometrists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Strong surgical judgment, multidisciplinary collaboration, compassionate family communication, and careful management of immunosuppressive therapies are essential.

Core Duties

Conduct comprehensive ophthalmic assessments for infants, children, adolescents, and patients with ocular inflammatory disease.
Diagnose and manage strabismus, amblyopia, congenital eye disorders, developmental visual conditions, and pediatric refractive abnormalities.
Evaluate and treat pediatric cataracts, congenital glaucoma, anterior segment abnormalities, and other complex childhood eye diseases.
Perform strabismus surgery and related extraocular muscle procedures.
Undertake pediatric cataract surgery and provide appropriate postoperative visual rehabilitation.
Perform surgical management of congenital glaucoma and other pediatric anterior segment conditions within approved clinical privileges.
Diagnose and manage complex uveitis, scleritis, retinal vasculitis, and ocular inflammatory disorders.
Assess anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis using appropriate clinical and diagnostic techniques.
Prescribe, monitor, and adjust topical, systemic, and locally administered anti‑inflammatory treatments.
Manage corticosteroid, immunomodulatory, biologic, and other immunosuppressive therapies in collaboration with relevant specialists.
Monitor patients for treatment response, medication toxicity, disease recurrence, and sight‑threatening complications.
Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic ophthalmic procedures when clinically indicated.
Interpret optical coherence tomography, fundus imaging, fluorescein angiography, ocular ultrasound, visual field testing, and other ophthalmic investigations.
Provide retinopathy of prematurity screening for premature and at‑risk infants.
Deliver or coordinate retinopathy of prematurity treatment according to clinical findings and established protocols.
Manage congenital and developmental eye disorders requiring long‑term ophthalmic surveillance.
Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, age, visual development, systemic disease, and patient needs.
Provide pre‑operative assessment, informed consent, surgical planning, and postoperative follow‑up.
Explain diagnoses, treatment options, surgical risks, visual prognosis, and long‑term care needs clearly to patients and families.
Collaborate with rheumatologists and other medical specialists for patients with systemic inflammatory or autoimmune disease.
Coordinate multidisciplinary care with pediatricians, retinal specialists, neurologists, geneticists, and allied healthcare professionals.
Participate in complex case conferences, clinical reviews, and multidisciplinary treatment planning.
Maintain accurate consultation notes, surgical reports, treatment plans, medication records, and follow‑up documentation.
Ensure compliance with Department of Health Abu Dhabi regulations, hospital policies, ethical standards, and clinical governance requirements.
Follow infection prevention, medication safety, safeguarding, confidentiality, and ophthalmic surgical safety protocols.
Participate in clinical audits, morbidity reviews, patient safety initiatives, and quality improvement programs.
Contribute to the development of pediatric ophthalmology and uveitis clinical pathways, treatment protocols, and referral criteria.
Teach and mentor residents, fellows, junior physicians, nurses, orthoptists, and allied healthcare professionals.
Participate in Continuing Medical Education, academic presentations, research projects, and scientific publications.

Required Skills and Experience

Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
Board certification or equivalent recognized specialist qualification in Ophthalmology.
Fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Uveitis and Ocular Immunology, or a relevant advanced ophthalmology subspecialty practice.
Eligibility for Department of Health Abu Dhabi consultant‑level licensure.
Minimum 5 years of post‑fellowship clinical experience in a reputable ophthalmology facility.
Strong expertise in pediatric eye disease, strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, and developmental visual disorders.
Demonstrated experience in pediatric ophthalmic surgery and postoperative management.
Advanced knowledge of uveitis, ocular inflammation, autoimmune eye disease, and systemic immunosuppressive treatment.
Experience managing complex ocular inflammatory conditions in collaboration with rheumatology and other medical specialties.
Competence in interpreting advanced ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic investigations.
Excellent clinical judgment, procedural accuracy, and evidence‑based decision‑making abilities.
