Role Context
The Consultant Obstetrician will provide dedicated obstetric care for women with normal and medically complex pregnancies, without a broader gynecological practice requirement. The position centers on antenatal surveillance, identification and management of pregnancy-related risk, labor supervision, cesarean delivery, emergency obstetric decision-making, and maternal-fetal monitoring. Close coordination with neonatology, anesthesia, maternity nursing, and other specialists will help ensure timely intervention and safe outcomes for mothers and newborns.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage normal pregnancies from initial antenatal assessment through delivery and postnatal review.
- Provide consultant-level care for high-risk pregnancies requiring enhanced maternal and fetal surveillance.
- Conduct antenatal consultations and develop individualized pregnancy management plans.
- Review maternal medical history, previous obstetric outcomes, investigations, and pregnancy-related risk factors.
- Monitor fetal growth, wellbeing, and pregnancy progression using appropriate clinical and diagnostic information.
- Identify maternal or fetal complications early and implement timely treatment or escalation strategies.
- Supervise labor and delivery while making evidence-based decisions regarding mode and timing of birth.
- Manage complicated labor and provide senior clinical input during rapidly changing obstetric situations.
- Perform cesarean sections when clinically indicated.
- Undertake emergency obstetric interventions to protect maternal and fetal wellbeing.
- Coordinate management of obstetric hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, fetal compromise, and other acute pregnancy complications.
- Provide postnatal assessment following normal, complicated, or operative delivery.
- Work closely with neonatologists when pregnancies involve anticipated neonatal complications or high-risk delivery.
- Collaborate with anesthesiologists regarding labor analgesia, operative delivery, and emergency obstetric procedures.
- Coordinate with midwives and maternity nursing teams to maintain continuity throughout labor and recovery.
- Counsel patients and families regarding pregnancy risks, delivery planning, emergency interventions, and expected outcomes.
- Maintain accurate antenatal, delivery, operative, postnatal, and consent documentation.
- Apply recognized international obstetric standards, patient safety requirements, and hospital clinical protocols.
- Participate in maternity audits, morbidity reviews, quality improvement initiatives, and obstetric governance activities.
- Contribute to clinical education, case discussions, and continuing professional development.
Ideal Profile
- Medical Degree from a recognized institution with specialist training in Obstetrics.
- Board Certification, Fellowship, or equivalent recognized qualification in Obstetrics.
- Minimum 5 years of consultant-level experience in obstetric practice.
- Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
- Female candidates are preferred according to the stated operational requirement.
- Strong expertise in high-risk pregnancy and maternal-fetal care.
- Extensive experience managing antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal patients.
- Proven competence in cesarean delivery and emergency obstetric intervention.
- Strong ability to recognize maternal and fetal deterioration and make timely clinical decisions.
- Experience managing complex pregnancies in tertiary maternity environments is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication and counseling skills when discussing pregnancy complications and delivery decisions.
