Job description

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Consultant Neurosurgeon to join a leading hospital or multispecialty healthcare facility in Dubai. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive neurosurgical care, including diagnosis, surgical and non-surgical management, perioperative care, and follow-up of patients with neurological and neurosurgical conditions.

The Consultant Neurosurgeon will work collaboratively with neurologists, neuroradiologists, intensivists, oncologists, rehabilitation specialists, and other multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, evidence-based and patient-centred care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, diagnose and manage patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions.
  • Perform elective and emergency neurosurgical procedures according to clinical privileges and competency.
  • Manage conditions involving the brain, spine, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system.
  • Perform appropriate cranial and spinal surgical procedures, including trauma and tumour-related surgery.
  • Evaluate patients using clinical examination, MRI, CT, angiography and other relevant investigations.
  • Provide pre-operative counselling and explain treatment options, risks, benefits and expected outcomes to patients and families.
  • Lead perioperative management and ensure appropriate post-operative follow-up.
  • Manage neurosurgical emergencies, including traumatic brain and spinal injuries, intracranial haemorrhage and acute neurological deterioration.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and tumour boards where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical records and operative documentation.
  • Develop and follow evidence-based clinical protocols and patient-safety standards.
  • Provide clinical supervision, teaching and mentorship to junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in continuing medical education, clinical audits, quality-improvement initiatives and research activities.
  • Maintain professional competence and comply with hospital policies, ethical standards and UAE healthcare regulations.
  • Work closely with the clinical privileging committee and medical leadership regarding the scope of neurosurgical practice. DHA notes that privileges for specialties without a dedicated DHA scope document are developed by the facility and approved through its medical director/clinical privileging process.
Areas of Clinical Expertise

Depending on the hospital's requirements and approved privileges, expertise may include:

  • Cranial neurosurgery
  • Brain and spinal tumours
  • Neurotrauma
  • Cerebrovascular and neurovascular surgery
  • Spine surgery
  • Degenerative spinal disorders
  • Intracranial haemorrhage
  • Hydrocephalus and CSF disorders
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Skull-base surgery
  • Paediatric neurosurgery, where appropriately qualified
  • Minimally invasive and image-guided neurosurgical procedures
Qualifications & Licensing
  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
  • Recognised postgraduate qualification in Neurosurgery.
  • Specialist/Consultant-level qualification recognised under the UAE Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR).
  • Valid professional registration/licence eligibility with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
  • Current registration/licence in the country of practice, where applicable.
  • Current Certificate of Good Standing.

For surgical specialties, DHA's registration process specifically lists a last-two-years surgical logbook among the required documents.

The current PQR specifies consultant qualification and experience requirements according to the tier of the recognised speciality qualification. For surgical/interventional specialties, the applicable experience requirements should be verified against the candidate's exact qualification and DHA assessment.

Experience
  • Minimum experience appropriate for Consultant-level DHA eligibility.
  • Strong independent experience in neurosurgical procedures.
  • Experience managing complex neurosurgical cases and emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in a recognised hospital or tertiary-care setting is preferred.
  • Teaching, research, publications and quality-improvement experience are advantageous.
Key Skills & Competencies
  • Excellent clinical and surgical decision-making skills.
  • Strong expertise in complex cranial and/or spinal neurosurgery.
  • Ability to manage high-acuity and emergency cases.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong patient counselling and informed-consent skills.
  • Commitment to patient safety and evidence-based practice.
  • Leadership and multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Ability to mentor residents and junior physicians.
  • Strong documentation and organisational skills.
Working Conditions

The Consultant Neurosurgeon may be required to:

  • Participate in on-call and emergency neurosurgical services.
  • Attend emergency consultations and urgent surgical cases.
  • Perform procedures in operating theatres and other designated clinical areas.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and clinical governance activities.
  • Work according to the hospital's roster, clinical privileges and service requirements.

A DHA professional registration confirms eligibility for the relevant professional category, title and speciality; the healthcare facility subsequently activates the registration into a professional licence before the physician can practise.

Salary & Benefits

The package may include:

  • Competitive tax-free salary.
  • Performance-based incentives, where applicable.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Annual leave and public holidays as per UAE employment regulations.
  • Annual air ticket, where applicable.
  • Relocation assistance, depending on employer policy.
  • Continuing Professional Development opportunities.
  • Professional indemnity coverage as per employer policy.
  • End-of-service benefits in accordance with UAE regulations.
