Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients admitted to intensive care.

Role Context This consultant appointment provides comprehensive care for patients with life‑threatening respiratory, cardiovascular, infectious, traumatic, neurological, and multi‑organ conditions. The physician will assess rapidly changing clinical findings, establish priorities, initiate organ support, and coordinate treatment throughout the patient 's ICU admission. The role combines direct critical care, procedural intervention, emergency response, team leadership, family communication, and clinical governance. Close collaboration with emergency physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other specialists will support timely decisions and stronger patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients admitted to intensive care.
  • Provide advanced life support for patients with respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, trauma, cardiac emergencies, and multi‑organ dysfunction.
  • Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments and review laboratory, imaging, hemodynamic, and microbiological findings.
  • Develop individualized critical care plans based on diagnosis, organ function, clinical priorities, and treatment response.
  • Manage invasive and non‑invasive mechanical ventilation.
  • Perform endotracheal intubation and advanced airway management within approved clinical privileges.
  • Insert and manage central venous catheters and arterial lines.
  • Perform bronchoscopy where appropriately trained and credentialed.
  • Use bedside ultrasound to support diagnostic assessment and procedural guidance.
  • Manage fluid resuscitation, vasoactive medication, sedation, analgesia, nutrition, and organ support.
  • Diagnose and treat sepsis, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and other critical infections.
  • Coordinate renal replacement therapy for eligible patients in collaboration with nephrology teams.
  • Support extracorporeal membrane oxygenation services where available and within the consultant 's clinical scope.
  • Apply advanced hemodynamic monitoring to guide cardiovascular management.
  • Lead daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds and establish coordinated management priorities.
  • Collaborate with emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesia, pulmonology, cardiology, and other specialties.
  • Manage postoperative and medically complex patients requiring intensive monitoring.
  • Participate in rapid response teams, code blue events, and hospital emergency preparedness programs.
  • Lead resuscitation and escalation decisions during acute clinical deterioration.
  • Review suitability for ICU admission, transfer, step‑down care, and discharge.
  • Communicate diagnoses, prognosis, treatment priorities, and critical decisions clearly to patients and families.
  • Support ethical decision‑making and goals‑of‑care discussions in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Supervise junior physicians, residents, nurses, and other ICU personnel where applicable.
  • Maintain accurate consultation notes, procedure records, medication plans, progress entries, and discharge documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with Dubai Health Authority requirements, infection control protocols, and patient safety standards.
  • Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, research, and quality improvement programs.
  • Contribute to teaching, simulation training, departmental meetings, and continuing medical education.
  • Remain current with advances in ventilation, sepsis management, hemodynamic monitoring, renal support, and critical care medicine.
Ideal Profile

Applicants must hold an MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution. Board certification, fellowship training, or an equivalent recognized qualification is required in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, or Anesthesia Critical Care. Candidates should have at least five to seven years of post-board consultant experience in critical care medicine within a tertiary‑care or academic hospital. Strong expertise in mechanical ventilation, sepsis management, advanced airway care, invasive monitoring, emergency stabilization, and complex ICU procedures is essential. Eligibility for a Dubai Health Authority Consultant licence is required. Current ACLS certification and other recognized advanced critical care credentials are preferred. Experience in high‑acuity multidisciplinary ICUs, ECMO, continuous renal replacement therapy, bronchoscopy, bedside ultrasound, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring would strengthen an application. The successful consultant will demonstrate confident leadership, rapid clinical decision‑making, compassionate communication, procedural competence, and the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced multicultural environment.
