Qualifications

• MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
• Board Certification in Critical Care Medicine or another recognized equivalent specialist qualification.
• Minimum 5 years of experience practicing at consultant level in an Intensive Care Unit.

Responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
• Lead the treatment of severe infections, sepsis, shock, respiratory failure, cardiovascular instability, and multiple organ dysfunction.
• Develop individualized critical care plans based on clinical status, laboratory findings, imaging, physiological monitoring, and treatment response.
• Manage invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and adjust respiratory support according to patient requirements.
• Perform and supervise critical care procedures including airway management, central venous access, arterial catheterization, and other invasive interventions.
• Conduct structured daily ICU rounds and coordinate priorities across multidisciplinary clinical teams.
• Respond to medical emergencies, rapid deterioration, and urgent intensive care consultations throughout the hospital.
• Monitor hemodynamic status, organ function, sedation, fluid balance, and therapeutic response in high-acuity patients.
• Review diagnostic findings and modify treatment strategies when patient condition or clinical risk changes.
• Provide consultant supervision to junior doctors, residents, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals involved in intensive care.
• Participate in on-call coverage and support emergency decision-making when complex or unstable patients require senior input.
• Maintain accurate records covering clinical assessments, procedures, treatment plans, progress, and communication with families.
• Contribute to clinical governance, morbidity reviews, patient safety initiatives, audits, and quality improvement programs.
• Participate in continuing medical education, staff training, and professional development activities related to critical care medicine.

Role Context

The Consultant Critical Care Physician will take senior clinical responsibility for patients requiring intensive monitoring, advanced life support, invasive procedures, and coordinated management of severe or rapidly deteriorating medical conditions. The role involves balancing immediate stabilization with ongoing organ support, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment planning. Working closely with physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied healthcare professionals, the consultant will help maintain high standards of ICU safety, clinical efficiency, and patient outcomes while supporting the development of junior clinical staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Western specialist training or certification is preferred.
• Strong experience managing ventilated patients and complex multisystem critical illness.
• Advanced competence in airway management, invasive monitoring, emergency stabilization, and critical care procedures.
• Proven ability to make rapid, evidence-based decisions in high-pressure clinical situations.
• Experience managing sepsis, shock, organ failure, respiratory emergencies, and other life-threatening conditions.
