Role Context
The Assistant Manager will oversee the successful day-to-day operation of the Lost Chambers Aquarium Marine Educator team, ensuring conservation education is delivered accurately, professionally, and in an engaging way. Working closely with the Manager, Conservation and Education, the role contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of formal and informal educational programmes in line with the Education Strategy and AZA Standards. It also carries substantial people-management responsibility, including training, coaching, onboarding, performance assessment, colleague engagement, and operational leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily Marine Educator operations and maintain high standards in the delivery of educational activities.
- Ensure Marine Educators engage guests professionally while communicating accurate information about marine life and conservation.
- Deliver and delegate conservation education programmes and marine animal activities according to operational requirements.
- Adapt educational delivery for both small and large groups.
- Monitor school visits and other educational programme bookings.
- Ensure appropriate resources are available and team members are properly briefed before educational activities.
- Support structured coaching and development covering marine life, conservation, and interpretation techniques.
- Ensure supervisors use research, participation, listening, and available learning resources to develop Marine Educator knowledge.
- Provide constructive feedback through regular training and assessment.
- Liaise with Admissions and Dive teams regarding educational programmes and tours.
- Coordinate scheduling, supply ordering, event planning, reporting, and other administrative responsibilities.
- Support the development and implementation of formal and informal education programmes in line with the Education Strategy and AZA Standards.
- Conduct educational and guest evaluations and prepare reports that support programme improvements.
- Monitor relevant KPIs and contribute to achieving departmental targets.
- Oversee regular quality and performance assessments for Marine Educators and Team Leaders.
- Promote continuous professional development with particular emphasis on conservation education.
- Maintain service standards that support and exceed departmental quality assurance guest survey targets.
- Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and departmental manuals remain current and accurate.
- Organise and deliver meetings and training sessions when required.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for guests.
- Ensure the Marine Educator team follows established animal welfare practices.
Team Leadership and Development
- Support recruitment of high-quality colleagues.
- Coordinate effective onboarding in accordance with established onboarding plans.
- Assist with colleague development, motivation, and retention.
- Coach colleagues and recognise strong performance.
- Support annual performance reviews where applicable.
- Address performance concerns through appropriate coaching and performance management.
- Assist with disciplinary action and counselling when required.
- Promote colleague engagement throughout the year.
- Track, assess, and coach colleagues participating in cross-exposure programmes.
- Support Team Leaders and Marine Educators in meeting operational and development objectives.
Guest and Stakeholder Coordination
The Assistant Manager will help resolve challenging guest interactions using clear, professional communication and sound judgement. The role also supports the resolution of colleague conflicts in accordance with HR practices and established performance procedures. Close coordination is required with Sales, destination management companies, PR, and Marketing teams for group activities and media shoots.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Previous education and guest experience within a zoo, aquarium, or museum is required.
- Previous experience developing and implementing educational programmes and materials.
- Experience evaluating educational activities.
- Bachelor 's Degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, Marine Science, Communication, or a related field is desirable.
- Strong customer service and administrative capabilities.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve operational problems quickly.
- Ability to work outdoors and in fast-paced conditions.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and walk throughout the property as required.
