• Assist with creating attractive library displays and promoting new books and events.

• Assist with stock checks and identifying damaged resources.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Librarian will support the School Librarian in the day-to-day running of the school library, helping to create a welcoming, organised and engaging environment that promotes reading, research and independent learning across the school.

This is an entry‑level position and would be particularly well suited to a candidate with previous experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) who is looking to develop their career within a school library setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the School Librarian with the daily organisation and smooth running of the library.
• Assist students and staff in locating books, resources and other learning materials.
• Support the issuing, returning, shelving and organisation of library resources.
• Help maintain accurate library records and ensure resources are appropriately labelled and catalogued.
• Assist with creating attractive library displays and promoting new books, reading initiatives and school events.
• Support students during scheduled library lessons and independent study periods.
• Encourage a positive reading culture and help students develop confidence in using library resources.
• Assist with stock checks and identifying damaged, missing or outdated resources.
• Support school-wide literacy initiatives, book fairs, author visits and other library events.
• Ensure the library remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment.

Candidate Profile

• Previous experience as a TA, HLTA or in a similar school-based support role is highly desirable.
• A genuine interest in books, reading, literacy and supporting young people.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.
• Confident working with students across different age groups.
• Basic IT skills and a willingness to learn library management systems.
• A positive, proactive and collaborative approach.
• No previous librarian experience is required; training and support will be provided.
